thank god for super glue!
Is the 1/4 x 1/2 long grub screw going to be okay (thats what i had) or should I re-drill and fit 8mm...cos thats what I have

mmm problem
how can you carry out step 17 without step 18 being made and put in place and connected to the top arms?
Maybe Steve will come and have a look and explain?
and what postion does the pivot units for the locking assy canter levers need to be?

DIY Angle iron
I attempted to make a length of heavy (16mm-50x66) piece of angle iron for the cross arm
I thought I could make it with out warping..but no.
I thought I had it clamped to stop that from happening when I welded it
the max bow is about 1.5mm.
Can I machine the bow out without it wanting spring/bow/twist or whatever at a later stage?
It wont matter if it ends up 14mm - 48mmx64

Machining is likely to cause it to bow again unless you 'normalise' it in a fire first. If you can, add some welds on the inside of the bow instead to let the weld contraction pull it straight. In other words, counteract the forces that caused the bow. You can grind away some of the weld afterwards.

some update pics.
Fingers just needing holes for clamp bolt
20170604_182226.jpg
Lift up assy started out as 20mm flat black bar. Bohler and the likes was just too expensive
20170521_161944.jpg
If the liftup bar moves back while folding I can place a set screw (or bolt) on the arm, that its bolted to...well at least thats the plan if it does move back while trying to fold 1.6mm

its all together
forgot to contour the top arms before I welded the top brace to the arms.
20170612_122739[1].jpg20170611_190221[1].jpg
and it works....had a job for it immediately, making some gas burner flame tamers/shrouds for the bbq
from this
20170612_111929[1].jpg
to this, made from 1.2 s/s.
20170612_120150[1].jpg
It will do small widths of 1.6 (not sure how wide at this stage), but I dont think it will do full width 1.6...need to get a little bit and see?
It will do 1.2 tho...and bolting it to the bench will make it easier. I need to make some hold down clamps as the holes in the feet interfere/conflict with the cast iron supports of the bench.
now to pull it apart and paint it...or CRC long life it might be easier...by not painting it you will also be able to see my brilliant machining and welding, and all the other faults

eskimo,
Good to see that you have finished and better still used it. It sure looks good and robust, what angle did you finally decide on for the fingers?

made them at 30 Bob
the cross arm is just a solid bit of 16mm x 60. I made an angle piece but when I welded it pulled and is now bent. I can get some extra support behind the bar if I need it. Just need to get a few bits of sheetmetal to see what occurs at a few varying width of 1.2.
Also might need to put a support leaf for front ...but can do this later if and as required

Hi Steve
Wonderful to hear from you.
I take it that you are a very busy luthier.
When you don't hear of someone in a long while you tend to worry!
Best regards
Grahame

Thanks Grahame, yes in the last 5 years I have never cleared my workload, so one gets caught up in that aspect of life.
The funny thing was, I started doing some rust repairs on my car again, been sitting there for 5 years now, I got my iPad out and started scrolling through some how to change quarter panels for my car to see if I needed to fit internal bracing and saw the metalwork forum and clicked, came up wth you have four notifications.
Some talented people running with that folder I designed is awesome to see
