Default Harvey model A pedestal drill

Picked up a Harvey Model A drill (Made in Australia) at an auction last Friday. 7/8" capacity, 5 1/4" quill travel, 3 pulleys 20 speed,, solid 3" column, rotatable table, and a rack adjustable table (yahooooo; I have 4 Tough drill presses and none have a table rack.) Quite a nice pulley belt tensioner system too. 3 phase.

Had to strip it down to get it on the ute, mostly in order to be able to move the lumps once I got it home. So did a quick clean-up and degrease. The pale green seems to be the original colour. A full strip and tanking will have to wait to next year.

The bearings are all smooth, and it is quiet. A mate has the same model albeit without the intermediate pulley.

The table is absolutely maggoted, and multiple cracks to boot. Not to worry, another mate has a never been used lathe 16 inch face plate. He is even turning up a mounting for me. Swapped him for a Metabo right angle drill I picked up at the asme auction (in combo with a small Metabo hand held linisher)

    Paid $120

Nice find A man can NEVER have enough drill presses. From what I could see the table doesn't look to bad!
One of the first things I do before using it, would be to put some sort of guard in front of the pulley, just so you don't get an injun hair cut (scalped).

not sure from the pics...but the intermediate pulley and maybe the drive pulley maybe worn..suggest you check out.
The bottom of the pulley seems too bright indicating the V belt may be bottoming out..especially the 2nd smallest on the intermediate and smallest on drive pulley

    nice looking drill tho

    Default maggoted drill press table

The table in the pics is one from one of my Toughs, as an interim measure, I have a bunch of RKS columns and cleats to drill today.
The original Harvey table pics below.

Bryn: There is a rather ugly fibreglass pulley cover, I took off. I have got used to exposed pulleys with the Toughs; they only have a front cover. Had thought already about fabricating something in aluminium.Another job for next year once the shed is up.

Eskimo: the quill/intermediate belt had a new cogged belt; they hadn't replaced the shorter intermediate/motor belt so Expect it has just worn down and rubbing on the groove root.
The belts are not in the positions they were. A new rear belt is on my list.

I think it was a herd. Real shame, the rest is in such good nick.

It got put to work today, drilling RHS columns, and flat bar cleats.

That thought crossed my mind too, in fact looking at the table it smacks of cheap asian manufacture, very light and thin webs on the casting, while the rest of the machine was strongly built. If so I think that the OP came out on top because that drill would have fetched a lot more than $120 if it had a half reasonable table I would have thought. I guess that they would still have had a drill with a POS table, whereas they might have a reasonable one if they did a swap. The big unused faceplate is looking pretty good from here.

    Default Faceplate table

Ropetangler; yes, there was one sold on eboo au yesterday for $650 AUD, a fair price. Mine was definitely a bargain, I knew that!

It has been a while but the mounting spigot for the table is finally finished, and my mate dropped it around today.
Cleaned up the surface with a woven pad, and dropped on the Brackenbury and Austin compound table I bought a month or so ago.

Need some hold down clamps, or some mounting plates to deal with the hole and slot ...

I like the face plate idea and think I will do a similar mod to my arboga radial arm drill.
The drill table is way too low for a buggered back and I was planning on making a drill table about a foot high to bolt onto the original table,
A face plate will make this a pretty simple job.

    thanks m8, shed

Now that is what I call a table, it looks great.
