    Default Bridgeport spindle regrind

    My bridgeport has started making a slight noise and it prompted me to do some investigation. Turns out the spindle has about 0.0023 of runout, which isnt great, the spindle bearing preload collar was also wound right down. So im thinking i either need to grind down the bearing spacer to get back some preload or get new bearings.

    If i get new bearings i assume im going to need to get the spindle r8 taper reground in the new bearings. Is anyone on the forum equipped to do this? The only place i know of th HM precision grinding but i dont think i have the kind of money to stretch to that. Any advice appreciated. Ralph

    Ralph, I doubt very much that you would need to get the spindle reground. If that was the case every time bearings were replaced in a car gearbox, all the shafts should be replaced as an example.

    Unless the taper is damaged you wont need to get it reground when you fit new spindle bearings.

    Thanks for the replies, i guess ive just looked at a few too many "argh spondle runout is 0.010 on my bridgeport" threads on PM.
