    Default Macson 2 as surface grinder

    Please excuse if the question is naive, I'm not much versed in ginders.

    But, can a Macson #2 T&C grinder perform 'normal' grinding duties? The vertical feed looks like it might be awkward as the handwheel is not on top, but apart from that?

    All thoughts and comments appreciated.

    Oh, and does anybody know how much they weigh? Got to be 600 kilos or so?

    Greg.

    No power feed therefore a PITA.

    Depends on what you want to do. But it is generally quite useless as a surface grinder.

    In fact I would advise someone that a surface grinder makes a better tool and cutter grinder, then a tool and cutter grinder makes a surface grinder.

    Agree completely. My T&C grinder is out on loan as I wasn't using it (might want it back soon, the blunt tools are accumulating). OTOH the little Power surface grinder gets a fair bit of use. It'd get even more use if it had power feed.

    You aren't going to be sharpening side & face cutters very easily on a surface grinder though. I think my baby cylindrical grinder would do them nicely, though (if I ever finished its restoration that is...)

    When I first aquired my T&C grinder, I did do some very basic SG on it and realised two things pretty quickly;

    (1) How useful a surface grinder would be, and
    (2) How frustrating and limiting it is using a T&C grinder as a SG!

    I use the sg a fair and really enjoy using it!

    There was an arbour support and wheel gaurd available for the Macson or Cincinatti grinders that made them better as a surface grinder. Apart from having to do everything manually they can produce good work. The table is not really that hard to move back and forth for grinding. Power feeds are really nice though!

    Darn! I posted here yesterday but ain't here.

    All thanks. It seems the jury has reached a verdict! Horses for courses I guess. I neglected to mention in my original post its intended usage. Not for production - more for helping fix bits of other machines like gibs and small bearing surfaces. I kind of liked the idea of the macson #2 as I see (with attachment) it also could do external grinding and the thought of making one's own test bars was pretty nice - though, I'll add a tool-post grinder to the list of project to do and maybem just maybe, I could squeeze an accurate test bar or three out of a worn-ish old south bend 10. Also with the macson the working area was like three feet.

    As it happen, I got lead on a Brown and Sharpe #2 that is in pieces and wants a good home. I posted separately for that.

    They also make shytehouse cylindrical grinders. Lack of power long *and* in feed & lack of flood coolant. Plus usually not easy to move in tenths of a thousandth of an inch. Can be made to work, the man I lent my T&C grinder to is using it to cylindrical grind motorcycle valve stems etc but he's a meticulous craftsman and far, far more patient than I am.....
