Collet price
Hi All,
Is there much difference between the one from Machineryhouse and the one off ebay apart from the price for this collet set? Will the cheaper set be ok to buy? Is there anyone in this forum using them? I don't want to be in the case of cheap man pays twice.
Supporting the local is good but I don't make money from the shed at all hence shopping for affordable at reasonable quality.

Hi Trong,
For most home hobby type usage I'd buy the cheap set. The difference between a cheap set and a quality collet apart from finish, is things like run-out.
The expensive ones from H&F looked to be overpriced for a Taiwanese no-name brand, if you want quality you should look for branded collets with a reputable brand, and known run-out specs.
Rego-fix is probably still the best you can buy in ER collets, although there are lots of others.

I would give the cheap ebay ones a go for home use. I have some of the Machineryhouse ones and I'm not very impressed with the quality. I use rego-fix collets at work and they are really good but they are about $30-40 each.

Thank you Ray and Snapatap. I'll give the cheap ebay's set a try then. I guess they would be more than the accuracy I need for the time being until I could get to the stage at where I need a better set for a job.

I bought a cheap set a year or so back. They've had a fair bit of use by now. Fit, finish & runout have all been well within my expectations and requirements.
I'd buy the cheap set myself. Pity they don't list cheap sets of ER40 collets - I can see going to this size for my bigger machines....

I have both a ER32 and ER40 set that I bought from CTC. Yeah I know. I have been happy with them. I would not consider paying H&F's price, but then I am a tight ar5e.

ER collet variations!! BEWARE
Make sure that the collet and chuck are the same, I found out the hard way. They are available in 2 different lengths, one is to a DIN standard and the other is Chinese anything goes. The seller doesn't normally list the length of the collets, so it is more or less potluck, unless they come from a well known factory.
This is an earlier thread; //metalworkforums.com/f65/t1921...length+collets

Thanks Trong for bringing this up. I will be in need of some as well.
Trying to work out what the difference between ER32 and ER40 is?

The ER32 series has a capacity of .02-.787 inches. ER40 range is .094-1.024 inches. The answer depends on what range you need. ER 32 and ER 40 are not interchangeable.

If you did want something better than the unbranded no name collets, RayG put up some links yesterday on the CTC thread, and browsing through shows a full set of metric collets with very good specs of less than 3/10 of a thou or 5 microns runout, but the cost is around AU$200 landed in Australia, almost 3 times the price of the collet set that you linked to. You might need to also upgrade your collet chuck to realise the benefits of the superior collets, but never the less, it would be about 1/3 to 1/4 the price of the very nice Rego Fix collets that Snap Tap has access to, with possibly not that much of a drop in quality to them. I think that I would choose the cheaper set, or at least a cheaper set, unless I had both the need and the machinery to get the extra quality the more expensive collets were capable of. (Unless I won Tatts of course)
Rob.
Here is a link to the metric collet set, have a browse on their other goodies while you are on their site, lots of tempting stuff there

There was a nice Rego Fix set of ER32 collets on the bay last week and that's not the first set I've seen. I was thinking about having a crack but decided to wait for an ER40 set to show up.

Point is, if you don't have a hard on for a super quality set right now, buy the cheapo set and wait for a quality set to show up at a more reasonable price.
Cheers,
Greg

Thanks everyone. I'm settled with with the ebay's sets for the time being and put that extra spending on other bits and pieces.
Regards,
Trong
PS: I'll add "Rego fix" to ebay search from today Greg, hope something like that turns up in the future.

Ok thanks for that. I was thinking that it would be handy to have a collet chuck thing for the lathe as well if I had to do some small stuff. In this case ER32 would probably be fine. Anything larger than that and I will probably get it in a chuck?
Given the mill is only 2hp I'm unlike to be able to drive a big cutter. So again ER32 would be OK and give me more Z space as well.
Only question is, can I get a rotor broach / annular cutter in an ER32. I have some tubes that need fish mouthing
