Babbitt ?
I have a babbitt block, (about the size of a 250g block of dairy butter), weighs 1.925kg. Has been used as a door stop in my shed, for decades.
Is babbitt still used in pewter, jewellery, bearings, whatever ?
I don't see babbitt listed under scrap metal dealer sites and I would like to get an indication of its value.
Any helpers ?

As far as the scrappy is concerned he would probably price it as lead or a down grade lead. If you are parting with it, its probably worth a bit more to someone on here as a curio rather than as scrap. I'd be interested, bobwardDOTlaidley@gmailDOTcom.

Anyone restoring veteran machinery and cars will sell their mother-in-law for it!

Hi Jeff,
That item as an antique is now rare and probably quite valuable.
My thoughts would be to hang on to it.Best Regards:

Hi Jeff
I would have to say it is priceless to me, but maybe that's just me.

Babbitt
Thank you gentlemen for your interesting replies.
"Morrisman" has provided a possible source for more information about the commercial value.
I don't fancy scrapping the babbitt. It appears to have a value for bearing refurbishment and some members have expressed an interest.
I don't expect it will lose value in a limited market, and it is still a good door stop if all else fails.
Many thanks.

If you have no actual use for it and want to know that it is used for the general good and for the satifaction of enthusiasts, why don't donate it to Soverein Hill - via Phil (Steamwhisperer)?
That way you can be proud to have contibuted to one of Australia's icons of machinery restoration.Cheers, Joe

I suppose you could call Phil, one of Australia's icons of machinery restoration. Well on here anyway.

Well, I've never been called an icon before Joe and Kryn, plenty of other things but never icon
As it stands at the moment we have about 15 bearings that need re-babbitting (if that's a word) and enough babbitt to do about 4.
Hi jeff
I couldn't tell you the worth of your block but it would certainly be used on one of our engines.
I'll let the boss know that it may be available but his first question will be "what is the make up of contents".
I'm preparing a post at the moment in whisperings of an engine that they want to run. A good example of where new babbitt 'wont' be used.
All will be explained.
