Vertical Milling Machine saved from getting smashed and going to China.
I posted some time ago about an old Vertical Milling machine that was at a place I bought a T&C grinder from. I saw the Torpex shaper he had there on ebay so I told a friend of mine about it as he wanted to buy my Torpex which I really want to keep. He was the only bidder so he got a bargain! I shifted it for him and saw the mill still there so we worked out a deal after my lovely wife gave me approval!
I called in a favour from a neighbour of mine and borrowed his crane truck. I took my sons with me and we got it to the front of the shed and slung it on. We also collected some round and hex bar stock and a heap of other bits and pieces. Another forum member was getting the rest of the bar delivered so I hope I left enough of the right stuff!
It was great to help identify a lot of the items for the guy as he cleaned out his late Fathers shed. Around the time I got the grinder I also bought a surface plate that his Father had gotten cast and then machined and scraped flat. He must have enjoyed scraping as he had done at least 3 surface plates, several machines and angle plates and many other items.
The mill was once a flat belt driven machine it appears and the drive has been changed to include a car gearbox. It is a fantastic old piece of machinery I am very pleased to have.

Nicely done.
Is it BIG? hard to tell from those photos but it certainly looks a decent size based on the motor and gear box on the top. any idea what taper spindle it is?
what are the plans, straight to making swarf or a restoration?

No.2 isn't to big as the crane truck could lift it! For me it is to big if the crane truck won't lift it, there is no way to load it, or when I get here our old Fowler 5t crane can't lift it! It stands taller than me, weighs over 1.5t and is about 2m wide.
It has gone into the storage shed at this point. I don't plan to do a full restoration but I would like to get it somewhere that I can get power to it and make some swarf with it.
The spindle has a long, large taper, not like the more modern shorter tapers. I am yet to check if it is the same as the Cincinnati No.2 universal mill with the round arbour support I have here in storage as well.

Glad both machines went to good homes. The mill certainly looked quite heavy when I saw it. I estimated 1.5-2t. Did you get the vice with it?
I had the option of purchasing the shaper a while ago. I decided against it for a machine I would use infrequently.
Don't worry about the bar. I've had two bites at it already, so the delivery is the last.
Some of the other items were purchased by another forum member so it makes 3 of us.
Good luck with the mill.

I didn't get the vice but I have upgraded the vice on one of the mills in the workshop so I have one a I can use on it.
Do you know what grade the bar with the red ends would be? I can't find my old chart and I had a guy call in last night wanting me to do a job for him and it is the right size.

It could possibly be locally made.
The spindle taper could be Brown and Sharpe.
The look of it screams Art Deco to me. Those curved louvers down the bottom.
Maybe 1930's?Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

About all I could get with a quick Trove search:
""Alfred Herbert" Vertical, No.2 Garvin Universal, Garvin Plain""
31 Jan 1920 - Advertising - Trove
Lathes UK: Garvin Milling Machines
Not much resemblance.
