Default Mens shed wants to sell Sheraton. Opinions on fair value please.

The local Men's Shed has a Sheraton A series lathe.

They have decided to sell it to make room for a milling machine

It has all the change gears, three jaw chuck, damaged four jaw chuck, face plate.

Has a 2hp three phase motor. We can provide a 2hp single phase motor which will bolt straight on.

We are after some opinions on what a realistic price would be.

    Located in Cockatoo Vic

    Thanks

Looks in decent shape, biggish bore, QCGB, power cross feeds.

Assuming it's not excessively worn, $1500 to $2000. Certainly not less than $1000.

    I agree with Pete,

You haven't said what tooling is supplied and this can make a big difference.

Put it on ebay. The potential buyers will soon put a value on it.

    Thanks gentlemen.

No tooling to go with it. Only the chucks and faceplate mentioned.

Any one else care to venture an opinion? Or advise.

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Wasn't meant like that, what I meant was you can ask what you like for it, but it is only worth what a potential buyer thinks it is worth to them.

You can see Hercus's go from a couple of hundred dollars on Ebay up to $1500 or $2000, just depends on what value any potential buyer puts on it, or what they think it is worth to them, if it's not a realistic price all you get are tyre kickers.

I do understand what you are saying. Whatever someone is willing to pay. I know that is what it comes down to in the end.

However I can put it up for auction starting at $10 and if it is a slow week for lathe buyers it may go for peanuts. That would not be a good outcome for the Men's Shed.

So I need to have a fairly informed idea of what is reasonably worth and then put it out there and wait for someone who is willing to pay that reasonable price.

Not much good me putting it up for an over-optimistic price and just wasting everyone's time. Don't want give it away for a silly price either.

Hence my enquiry of members with more experience in these matters.

Just trying to help out a group of retired pensioners who have little idea of what ebay or Gumtree is.

Its a geared head machine so that a plus as long as its all ok, I would assume that you would inform a potential buyer if it was not.

If you list it on ebay I would start with buy it now or make offer set buy it now at $2000 except any offers over $1500.

If it dosent reach your price pull it off, have a start price of $1000.

i had my Sheraton CUB 600 practically given to me, delivered even.
since then i have spent around $600 on the VFD 3phase conversion using new good quality parts. i probably need to spend at least that again on some tooling and a new 4 jaw chuck, so thats $1200, if you add that to the cost of a lathe at $2k, someone will be in the hole $3500.

is it more or less of a machine than what you can buy new?
are other lathes of similar spec at the same price, more or less?

    what about delivery and loading?
if the mens shed has the ability to load it at there end it will make a difference.

how big is it? if its not too long you might get that up with an engine crane.

i lifted my Cub 600 out of the trailer with an engine crane.

In my opinion I would value it around the 600 to 800 range max

    Too many unknowns

It may have a good name but into days market place just not worth it

Too big for those in units etc and only valuable to the older generation who remember them (with all due respect) but in the cold hard light of day basic machine with no accessories for a hobby lathe only its bordering on too big for most guys and needs work motor wise

Is it the same model as this one? Sheraton Lathe Vintage in VIC | eBay
Might give you an idea of market value.

Looking more closely now, it seems to me that yours is NOT a model A, but that it has a model A feed screw gearbox fitted. I can't find another one to confirm the model. Very different to the cub or cadet though....

The lathe you have referred to is not similar to the one listed originally except for the gearbox.

The lathe that is being asked about is an All Geared Head (A) model with 13" swing, the only prices I have found date from 2013 $359 (greys) and 2016 $1500 (ebay).

It may be a type of clone of a Leblond Regal 13", that Sheraton call a Conquest.
