Default Are you a new Member? Asking a Question - Read This

I urge any poster to include as many details as possible about what he is attempting to achieve. We have folk here in our forums who will go out of their way quite a bit to help you.

If you make the process difficult with lack of information that you could have easily supplied first up, those responders will be less likely to want to help you if they have to pry answers, one at a time from you.

So often when people ask a question here, respondents to the question are left out in the dark, to play a post by post guessing game, that could have been well avoided by including a range of details pertinent. This takes time, not everyone has a great deal of it.

    • • Detail what you are trying to achieve, the item you are making or propose to make
    • • Supply lengths widths depths diameters, tolerances and material types if pertinent
    • • If there is a choice of processes that could be used, specify which one
    • . Sometimes the environment your job will be expected to work in-that may affect the choice of materials
    • What tools and equipment do you have, that you think might do the job ?
    • And photos, post photos if at all possible

Don't take my post in the wrong way. Its about making the process of answering a posters question so much easier, if just given some basic details to filter out a whole lot of unsuitable options.

Supplying as much information as you can will get you to your desired outcome much quicker and make it easier on the good folk on the forum who had the courtesy to answer your question, but will tire of it, if the process is made too difficult or frustrating for them.

    Cheers
    Grahame

    OK what about PDF files?
    are they permissible:
    will the moderator allow them?

I have only done a few post's and they have to be moderated,

I may just peruse instead. and sit at the back of the class

What's happening is that the system Moderates the first few posts of a new member as part of the anti spam measures,

unfortunately it catches the good guys too as it can't differentiate.

The Volunteer Moderators and Admins check regularly to approve the good guys and dispatch the spammers.

It's was not uncommon in the past to have to deal with several hundred spammers a day that would bombard the forums with spam.

That's fine, we welcome new members here who are willing to learn from other members, and also new members that are willing to assist existing members.

This is a family friendly forum and we will keep it that way.

Stick with that and we'll all get along fine.

I can see and read all of your 6 posts, so you haven't been moderated.

As pointed out by Bedford. You get a slow start here, just to work out your a human, and not some spam Bot. I'd expect you have the full key to the front door by now, so there shouldn't be an issue?

    Regards Phil.

For what it's worth, I have noticed some of the enquiries looking for someone to make a part ,lack tolerances, which make responding very difficult.
I wonder if that's worth adding to the first post. regards Brian

    Hi Briangoldcoast,
Thanks for helping fine tune the sticky!

I have added the single word "tolerances" to the sticky.

Now here's hoping that the people who come to ask questions and beg machining favours, remain with us as solid members and not disappear as soon as they get what they want?

Hello Grahame, I wonder if you can help me please. I want to ask a question and do not know how to do it. My question is to the Hercus expert machinists. Recently I relocated my Hercus 9A, and I noticed that it cuts a taper of 8Th 0.008" on a five inch bar. No tailstock involvement. The Chuck side is thinner than the tailstock side by 0.008". I did try for the last three days to adjust the legs and the Headstock, but I cannot succeed. Any ideas will be appreciated.
    Thank you

Hi Jim, if you were to cut and paste this into the Hercus section of the Forum, you should be right. Do you have access to a machinists level? You'll probably find that the bed of your lathe has a slight twist to it, so using a machinists level should help solve the problem.
