The Hercus 260 lathes at one of the schools I taught at,had that same set up on their vernier dial spindles.

The dials shown are good in comparison, with the hercus vernier dials, in that they are large diameter and can be read easily. The Hercus dials dated from the 1970's and were small diameter- about 30mm if I remember, rusted on their surfaces, making them illegible.

I replaced a set but the replacements themselves being some 30mm in diameter and still with set screws, were still very difficult to read, not that too many bothered.

Perhaps the original just had a thumb screw in the cross slide and compound dials. Perhaps a good project?

At a guess because of "dings" in the shaft. Something else to fix

True... Have to watch out for that ball and spring when I remove the handle. I'll get to it one day.

Well segmented belts are out. Min order qty 10 metres @ $60/metre. Also they are not designed to run in reverse, and only meant for emergency/temp use. I'll stick with the belt that's on it until it breaks.

Here's another funny thing....When I went to test some threading, I thought well ok just pick one, so I thought 12mm will do....Nope, this lathe can't do 1.75...what the !............So I check with a 1/2" instead and found it easy cutting threads with this machine.

These are the original dials but I don't know if someone put the grub screws in or they were made like it but, yes they are really nice to use. The cross slide dial is 65mm and the combo slide is 51mm.

I noticed someone else was looking for a manual on the HAFCO AL 350A mini lathe.
I am restoring an old lathe and would like to get my hands on a copy of the Operating manual. A scanned (PDF) copy would be great.
Hafco could not help but instead directed me to download a more modern lathe's manual which has some similar features.
If anyone can help please email me a copy of post a link so I can download a copy. Thanks

    Hi Leon
    Welcome to our MetalWorking forums.
Responses to your inquiry might take a while as people with a similar machine may be still away on holidays etc.

In the meantime could I suggest you take a look through :

    Metal Lathes - Grizzly.com

Grizzly has manuals and very good manuals too, for the lathes they have sold.

It is just possible the lathe you own is a generic, similar to one Grizzly may have a manual for, albeit under a different model name.

I had a quick google looking for a picture and could not find a reference on AL350 lathes.

If you look through the grizzly lathe catalogue ,you just might spot one, visually similar to your own.

There will be a link on the bottom of of the grizzly page for the manuals.

Gee I didn't see this reply, I haven't been getting any notifications.
and no, I never did find a manual for my lathe, did you ?
Closest I ended up with is for the Hafco AL-960B. (Can be retrieved from machineryhouse site) but there are a few major differences like as one example the 960 has a geared head but the 350 is swap pulleys so it doesn't help me to pull it apart.

I've got some issues with it now so going through doing some maintenance on it. The belt is now giving some grief, the chuck turns with tight spots. The lathe runs with rattles and if I run it with feed the gears are really noisy. In fact if I do that in high speed it's near deafening. I'm guessing it could do with new spindle bearings too.
