Default Gasket For Rotary Hoe Transmission

I had to pull my Rotary hoe transmission apart, again.

Originally the tranny had a continuous weld all the way around it, I had to cut it and make my own flange for it so I could bolt it back together.

What type of gasket sealant do you recommend?

Do I use it with or with out a cork gasket?

What can I use for seals on the shaft where the tines attach to, under the steel cover on the R/H rear half?

I cannot get any spare parts for it as its too old, at about 15 years.

Don't worry about a cork gasket, unless you have included it's thickness in the spacing/depth of the flange you made. I would go for a quality sealant like threebond or something.

What type of seals did the shaft originally have? Where the inners lubricated with an oil bath or just packed in grease?

loctite make a red gasket maker material, or use grey silicone.
Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

It is a Masport Rotahoe 5, I haven't been able to find any one in Aust that sells parts.

Not a good pic but it shows the rubber? seal that is disintegrating and bronze bush behind it.

What it looks like when it ready to go back together
It was lubricated by an oil bath.

For a gasket just some ordinary silicone will do the trick. If you can find a number on the seal, ask at the local bearing place to see what they might have, failing that measure your shaft and find a seal that will fit, the housing may need modifications, which should be easy for a bloke like you.

Geeez, there's some wear on those sprockets. Have you looked at replacing them and the chain. Might not be worth the cost though.

I'm not too keen on Silastic for sealing against oil, as in my experience it needs to have fully cured before being exposed to the oil, but another big issue can be getting the assembly apart again if the need arrises. Either Loctite master gasket or even better IMO would be Permatex No.2 gasket compound would be my choice.

    WM460,
If you google rotary hoe parts or manuals, you should find an exploded view for that machine and you may be lucky enough to have a part number that is universal. As the other posters have said, good quality silicone, let it cure before refilling with oil.

Agree about the Silastic. I use Loctite Blue Maxx. Good stickability but you can actually get it off again if you have to.

When selecting a silicone make sure it is suitable for use as gasketing and is oil resistant. There are silicones and there are silicones.
    Cheers.

I am heading to Alice Springs tomorrow morning, I will take the tranny to CBC Bearings and see if the can help me with the bushes and seals.
