DIY magnetic chuck
I found this ..................
Popular Mechanics October 1982 page 65 on google books ------- on google type in popular mechanics magnetic chuck and that will find it.
First couple of pages is a lot of general discussion before he gets to the guts of it. The photos tell the story very well.
I went up to the shed and had a play with some tiny (10mm diam x 5mm thick discs) neodynium magnets and using the pole pieces to concentrate the flux does seem to work.
Some bigger but still relatively inexpensive neodynium magnets might be enough to make this chuck.
I liked the mechanical fingers as a backup to stop things sliding.
............. and a really fun thing to do is to drop a neodynium magnet down a close fitting copper or brass (or any metal ?) pipe - it just flooooaaats down ever so slooowly - kept me amused for ages. There are videos about it on you tube
