Replying to posts, unnecessary quoting
When replying to a post please don't use the Reply with Quote button unless absolutely necessary, especially if there are pictures in the post you are replying to.
Using the Reply with Quote button this way makes the thread unnecessarily long and it takes much longer to scroll through.
We see plenty of threads where this happens, there may be several pictures in a post, then someone replies to it quoting it and we see all those pictures posted again, usually right underneath the original post, with maybe 1 or 2 lines of text.
Please use the Reply to Thread button where ever possible, it will make scrolling through a thread much easier and quicker for everyone.

I will add that you can when quoting, delete any bits including pictures that are not required to be quoted..

My recommendation on the other forum was to remove the "reply with quote" button altogether as it is possible to quote in other ways.
An alternative I have seen on other forums is to remove the "reply with quote" button and replace it "select message for quoting".
Then in the edit window there is a button that says "insert quoted message".
This 2-step process forces the responder to think a bit about what they are doing.
Although there are still a few ning-nongs that still quote the whole message without any reason it has still lead to a great reduction in number of replies quoting the whole message.

That alternative would be better than just deleting the Reply with Quote button.
There are certainly a lot of people that by habit use the Reply with Quote button, sometime whole slabs of text are repeated as well as the pictures, it makes a thread very hard to read.
You get a whole slab of quoted text, then the only thing added may be only a few words, or 1 sentence, or just +1

To save confusion for some who may not have read the entire original quote perhaps you need a forum standard 'practice' for abbreviated quotes.
In other forums when part posts are being quoted I've seen the word Extract used at the start of a post. There are probably several other methods.

I type "Snip" where I have deleted parts of a post.
I particularly dislike repetition of full size pictures. It is annoying for someone who has a limited data allowance like me.

Yes Dean, I should have pointed that out too. Those big pictures not only take up a fair bit of space that we have to scroll past, twice, but it is also very inconsiderate to those people, like you, on a low data allowance and/or slow internet connections.

I like BobL's idea of removing the Reply With Quote button. It will mean a small inconvenience for most of us, but it should prevent the few mindless robots from filling a thread with huge slabs of quoted text and photos.

I like having the option of being able to quote text (or parts of it) when replying. The reason being that it is in response to a statement or question and I think you gain clarity if you can link a response to the thing that triggered it (especially if several posts are between your response and the originating post). However, I do think that requoting an entire post is a waste of electrons. I usually indicate a portion of a quote using ellipses (...) to show removed text.
Photos I certainly think could/should be removed from quotes though.

Many people quote multiple members posts with each members name given such as

I find this useful. I have started to click on the "Reply with Quote" for multiple members posts and then copy/paste the required parts into one post and dumping the unused pages. I know it is only a matter of typing in the correct characters to have this happen, but I am getting this old and it keeps all the information I require on screen by changing tabs.
Maybe the first step would be to place a big banner at the top of the page to try to change habits. Suggest to City/Town based members with massive super fast download allowance/speeds that not everyone is in the same position as them. I will always be well behind in this regard until I move to a population centre and I hope that will be a center of very, very quiet people.
Having said this I am waiting for the start of the NBN satellite service, which I have been informed by a tech from my IP will be sometime next month. This is meant to be far better than the Ipstar service I now receive. Cheaper too I have heard. One can but hope.

Dean there is a Multi Quote option (button next to quote) that you could use. It's a bit simpler than lots of cutting and pasting.
Cheers.
Vernon.
