Steel Suppliers in Sydney
I am trying to buy some 1215 grade free machining steel in a few sizes. Maybe some round bar, some flat and some square in various smallish sizes. My local steel merchant (Mascot Steel) were unable to help. When I asked at the counter for some free machining steel the sales guy just said we only have mild steel. When I asked him what grade he told me mild steel and he had never heard of any different grades. I bought a bit of round bar and took it home, it was black steel bar ( hot rolled I am guessing )and machined OK but with a pretty bad finish. Edcon steel have some bright mild steel which is better but still not great. Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent steel supplier in Sydney where I can get a few pieces of free maching steel. It doesn't have to be 1215 grade, just something with a little lead in it would be fine.

You might try Bohler-Udderholm who have a Nth Parramatta address, phone 9681 3100. Up to about 18 months ago they had a retail outlet at Kings Park called The Steel Store where most grades of steel & CI were available. Unfortunately it has closed, and I suspect those services may be no longer available. It would be worth a phone call.

I understand Bohler have Wollongong and Newcastle warehouses, doubt that would be economic for a few bibs and bobs. Guildford the other one, closed 6 or 7 years back, I'd be surprised if Parra was anything but an office.
Bit ironic, what was once a very industrial area not that long ago, from Redfern, Alexandria to Mascot you struggle to get a bit of steel now! Could try Interlloy if you fancy a hike and avoid fees.

I believe EDCON steel still supply engineering steels. You might have to talk to head office to order it. Have a look at the website and play with the steel finder search engine. It lists free cutting mild steel as a grade.I noticed a few years ago they changed the website and removed the visible links to engineering steels, it's in the downloadable catalog also. I think all engineering steel is stocked at Milpera (Revesby) store as I have ordered small amounts of differing grades and it is cut and shipped from there to blacktown where I collect it.
The free cutting stuff would more than likely be 12S14 (S1214) (sulphurised) mild steel. Unlikely to get leaded (12L14) as I don't believe it's manufactured now due to OHS issues with handling lead at the smelter.

Here's the tech data on 1214 (12S14) there's a list of recommended alternatives in this sheet. Notice it warns against galvanising and welding and it has an unchecked tensile strength.

If you tell edcon steel what you want im sure they will order it, usually when they order stuff in its a minimum order, usually a length. Have a look on edcons website and they have the steels they 'stock'

Thanks Swarfmaker and other respondents. I did as suggested and used the advanced search facility and was able to see they do sell free machining steel grade 1214. It's just not listed in the steel finder. I have bought from them before and found the guys on the shop floor quite helpful so I will order what I need from them. Thanks again to all.
