    i ryn,
back when I started to unassemble this column, I sent 3 pics of it, where I was asking which fasteners to undo first.
You can see the piece of flat bar inside the column above the bronze block.
You could be right that it is a stop, but when the bolt is tightened it would also lock the grinding head to the column. Why I don't know, because theres a pefctly adequate locking lever as part of the grinding head.
Things will have to sit in abeyance for a few days while I attend to some 'car trouble'.
Now that is not something i consider good time
    regards

    Default Update

    Hi Guys,
Here's an update on my progress.
Just one pic but Ive cleaned up both castings and painted them. I'm still working on the grinding head and column. There's some 'bush mechanic" work I have to try and tidy up, as well as completing the arbor to hold the grinding wheel.
I have sourced a 1/2 hp motor and I get that next week. That will need mounts.
It's been too hot to spend a lot of time on the project.
Thanks for taking the time to check it oiut
    regards
    Brian

I've cleaned up the table and got it to track smoothly and have started on making some of the accessories pretty.
I'm waiting on an arbor I made to be threaded, since i don't have imperial threads on my lathe, then I can start assembling the grinding head.
I pick up the motor next week.

    Default PROGRESS!!

I have scraped and polished and wire brushed and sanded and painted for the last couple of weeks and I started assembly yesterday.
Here is the results so far.
All I need now is the arbor and a flat belt.
Anyone know where I could look for one?
    The pulleys are 1 1/8 wide (28mm)
Thanks again for all the interest
    regards
    Brian

Nice work on the restoration. Is the stone one that you put on or was it with the machine? Do you have a saddler close to you, as they should be able to make a belt for you, and I would say a place like Blackwoods, should be able to supply a joiner.

Thanks for the suggestion Michael--I will follow that up.

Kryn--The stone is one I had changed over on a standard bench grinder and I was just 'fooling around' trying it for size since it had its own arbors. The 'real' grinding head is on the other end of the shaft, beside the drive pulley, but it seems its possible to attach stones to both ends of the grinding head. Ive seen this in some of the pics sent to me by helpful guys here.
I have yet to understand the significance of this, but that will lead to a lot of questions once I get the basic machine running.
There's a few bits and pieces I don't understand sitting in an ice cream container.

    Default What is this for?

This piece of kit came with the grinder.
I have seen something similar on a couple of the pics sent to me by other owners of similar grinders, but they have a neat little motor mounted on top (from what I could see in the pics.)
The slides on this, are a bit wide for the slot in the table but I guess I can always make them smaller if it's worth the effort.
I have no idea what this could be used to do, so I hope someone can give me a 'simple' explanation, or even better direct me to some pics.
I'm guessing a collet chuck fits into the end with the heavy external thread. (the hole seems to be MT2)
IS there some clever little motor that is available somewhere that might fit if theres nothing genuine available.
    Thanks as always

Does the spindle slide back and forward or can it only rotate?

    Stuart

p.s. I think I've changed my mind . I was thinking end mill sharpening but the flutes would have to be very short short.

    Hi Brian,

Looks a bit like a motorized workhead, but missing the motor, pulleys and of course the chuck. Sometimes they have a spin indexer.

    Hi Ray,
I suspect you are right. Any idea where I can get details on the workhead. properly set up, so I can try and source missing parts. I can only guess what's missing at this stage.

    Hi Brian,

I've changed my mind, I dont' think it's part of a motorized workhead, ( although it still could be.. ) are you sure it can't move back and forward?

    Ray
