drill press vice
opinions sought on best drill pres vice....I have 150mm unigrip Dawn. but its too big for table of the waldown..I thinking I need a 100mm for most work allowing easier fastening.
The 150mm is pushing the table slots to allow east setup and clamping
is there anything better than the dawn unigrip for a lot less $$

You mean the red "Dawn Unigrip - made to Dawn specifications and quality requirements"? I bet it is made in China, just like the "precision drilling vises" from H&F and others. The only difference I can see, is the paint color. The blue H&F have an added oil nipple. I use one of these on the Waldown, the 100mm model. If anything, I sometimes wish I had bought the 125mm model.
Years ago I bought a Dawn vise, only the cheaper model as I use it on the welding table and did not want to ruin a good expensive vise. I was surprised it was made in China too. They just rivet their good name pate on it. That is how a hard earned good old brand reputation is converted into short term shareholder value.

My dawn 125mm vice that i had for a year or two was made in Australia. When I checked at the time of purchase i did not find any dawn product that was not made in Australia, but times may have changed.
I love the vice and don't use any thing else on my drill press. It is head and shoulders above the other 4 or 5 that I have.

You could always opt for the real deal Richard but there's a but.. the price.

More realistically, how about a small Palmgren vice from the States? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Palmgren-Dri...item461f46476d I have a couple of little Palmgren vices with 1 1/2 " jaws and a 3" tilting vice. Made well enough but not a match for the real thing.

I've been thinking about a drill press vice for some time now.
So after reading above I started looking at the Dawn 100 or 125mm vices.
They seem to do two models in aeg size; one around $80 and one around $300!!!
What's the difference?
Thx
Jon

Do you think the red Dawn drill vise for under $100 is made in Australia? Maybe from local and imported ingredients . I simply cannot believe its possible to manufacture that cheap here. Our wages are just too high for such stuff.
I still had the box where my disposable bench vise for the welding table was packed. Have a good look at the print just below the red line between the vise picture and the bar code. It only cost me under $100 new. I do not believe it could be made here for nearly that sort of money. And that design is not worth more either.
