Default A HUGE Thank you to Bob L

None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for Bob's generosity, expertise and patience.

To be honest Stu, the turning was more nerve racking than dealing with the piddly wire. There wasn't a lot to hold on to so I was constantly fearful of peeling the job out of the chuck. Loctite was my friend, again.

Nice work BobL and BobT, in the world of star/delta conversions, that one has to be a degree of difficulty 10. Nice to see it all came together.

Thought about the switching a bit then got consumed by the turning Bob.

I will use the grinder's switches to switch the VFDs remotely via the contactors. Switching the VFDs' supply power really needs to be via a pair of illuminated switches in a visible position. The original power on-off switch is tucked away behind the rear of the base.

    Hey Dean,
When I turned the VFD on, the motor ticked over at about 15 rpm. I thought FM! Then I realised the VDF was running on 5 Hertz. That was the first time I had ever wired it up, it has sat new and unused in its box for about 3 years. I had bought it for the 13's coolant pump.

Certainly was a great feeling to see and hardly hear it running at 50Hz.

Well done BT and Mr Bob. To me that was a radical conversion and great outcome.
    Cheers,

The instructions that came with mine say that it should not be left unused for any length of time. It should be powered up every so often. After reading this I was glad when it was still working. It was sitting in my metalworking cabinet for about 2 years.

I fully understand your feelings, although I did not have the dramas that you did with the motor.

Not sure but I suspect it may be due to the fact that capacitors do not like sitting around doing nothing.??

Sorry, back to crimpers, I was in Altronics this morning buying a couple of relays so I has a look at their crimpers

At the last moment I weakened and got sucked in by the magnets and bought the Deluxe Magnetic 7 piece jaw set

Yes they are somewhat overpriced but I've done it now and they should last me and my son for many years to come and hopefully save me the odd trip to where I used to work to borrow theirs.

    Hi Bob,
I wouldn't be to worried, you did better then me, the above lug shop is closed Easter Tuesday! In 6 months you'll have forgotten the price.... so they tell me.
Mine crimpers have a "quick release" as well. Depending on what you do it could get painful real fast playing around with screws. One thing that did cross my mind with the screw ones, perhaps the hole could be turned into a slot so you only need give the screw half a turn?
Sometimes it would be nice to have two handles

As soon as my son sees these he will want to borrow them and sure as eggs he will not be leaving the jaws in them that I next need to use. It's trivial stuff really but every now and then it's nice to purchase something quirky and the price is fading fast.
