    Default Ebay Global Shipping Program

    Anyone come across this before?

I bought an item in the US on ebay.... It was shipped through this ebay global shipping program... I got a USPS tracking number as well as a global shipping number...

The USPS tracking number has now finished and said item delivered in Kentucky... I immediately thought I was given the wrong number, so I sent a message to the seller... He said it is being sent through Ebay global shipping program, and he sends the items to a Kentucky distribution centre..

It is hard to see the point of it as the shipping cost was the same as a generic USPS medium flat rate box...

It'll be interesting to see how it gets delivered from Kentucky to you i.e. USPS, Fedex, UPS, etc. and if you end up paying 'fees' for local clearances.

I found it very confusing and annoying as well as you don't get a choice (in fact, the fine print says if you don't like it, don't buy). If there is a choice available I go with the vendor who does not offer it - I prefer them to ship direct or to my Shipito box.

It never said in the ad that it would be this shipping type....Although it did not say USPS either for that matter...

Amusingly the ad did say delivery within 2 to 6 days.

Seems to be a good thing, both for the seller and for the buyer. I just fear, it may cost more than flat - rate USPS.

If you visit the American eBay site, you will find lots of (sometimes interesting) sellers that do not want to sell to foreign countries. The reason is they may not want the hassle of obtaining and filling in international documents. They may not like to queue at the post office. Or they may not be sure if the item can legally be exported at all. Or they find it too hard to estimate a realistic packaged weight to calculate international postage in the first place. And then compare costs of several options like USPS flat rate, USPS parcel, UPS, DGHL etc etc. to find cheapest or fastest or safest...

Here some explanations how the program works:
    Using the Global Shipping Program

BTW, Amazon has something similar. I bought some accessories for a belt sander last year from Amazon. Postage and packaging was by Amazon, not by the seller shop. Same with a Drill Doctor (no worries, it is 110V but I have a step-down transformer to run it, can live with that for half the price of a 240V model).

Looking at the listing linked to, toward the bottom under Payments and the Paypal logo, it says that international shipping fee is paid to Pitney Bowes. From memory they handle shipping my Fine Woodworking or Woodwwork Journal mags, generally via Europe and generally arriving before the emails from the publisher promoting the new issuee of the mag.

Wait and see, but if it is Pitney Bowes, it should run fairly smoothly, except for hangups in the AU Customs due to chronic pre Christmas overload. They may even be buying priority service there.

Interesting. My take is that ebay is playing catch up here, they have figured out that people like shipito are making a dollar out of shipping stuff overseas and want a slice of that action. If ebay can divert the stream of ebay parcels away from shipito they could severely damage shipito's business model.

A side benefit to ebay is that they will experience an increase in ebay sales from US sellers that have a phobia about overseas sales, not to mention generating more profits from PayPal's cross border fees.

Doing some research and it is Pitney Bowes where the pacel is sent to in KY... All they do it forward it onto Fedex who should ship it here, which is a PITA, as fedex will pass it onto a local courier, who will not deliver to me as I am outside their delivery zone by 12km... They will expect me to drive to meet them somewhere....

I got caught with RS online this way.... A $4 packet of brass ferrules, they expected me to spend more on fuel collecting them, then they are worth, when I had already paid for delivery... Au post deliver everything to my door three times a week...

But back to this method as freighting... Apparently the sellers liability ends when the package arrives in KY.. You cannot leave negative feedback if the package either does not arrive or arrives damaged.... I do not know if the goods are even covered by paypal..

The sellers liability ends when the package arrives at the US collection point. But that is where eBay's and Paypal's insurance and liability begins. Regardless if the seller insured the shipment or not, it is insured by eBay up to your door.

But yes, as you say if they use UPS then there is no delivery to rural addresses. I live 45km from Melbourne CBD, but have to go and pick up UPS parcels from my post office where they drop it off.

You are lucky. I have to travel 60 km to Casterton, a town I have visited about 6 times in the last 13 years and if I am lucky the shop that is the dropoff point there might let me know or I have to ring up to see where the parcel is. I had a mobile phone sent from Telstra in Warnambool which finished up in Casterton. I rang them to see where it was. On being told, I said that was no good to me and if thats the best they can do I did not want the phone. They had it picked up and delivered to my work. Funny thing is it was supposed to be signed for by me with a photo ID in hand, no option. Said so on the parcel. It was just dropped off in the wrong department and noticed there by my supervisor.

My issue is I live in Victoria so any parcel gets sent via Melbourne. I work 28 km away in SA. The local store there is a courier depot. It is also a post office where I also have a post box. Many businesses will not deliver parcels to a post box. Computer components are a huge problem with this. I have got around the problem by using the store address as my delivery address without mentioning that it is a store, let alone a post office.

Well it is on the move again... Now in Chicago Illinois.... Which I know a USPS international packages building is there....

If they send it by USPS it will be pathetic service as the seller told me it is in a medium flat rate box, yet they charged more then a medium flat rate box for delivery by $16....

Oh and in other freight company news... Meister DRO.... collected by fedex in Singapore last Wednesday... Arrived in post today...

Bought a printer in brisbane, collected by Couriers Please last wednesday.... gone MIA....

While the printer is still MIA (apparently is has been lost by AU post as the couriers handed it to them) the ebay item through global shipping is getting closer... Certainly has been scanned a lot of times
