Fair price for T&C grinder
G'day All
My poor old uncle (84) has got alzheimer's pretty bad now and looks like he will have to go into a home. He has a fair bit of equipment including an old C & C tool and gutter grinder. I'm not sure exactly how much stuff he has with it but I'd like to offer to buy it from my aunt. I haven't had a look at it for a fair while now but the last time I saw it it was in pretty good condition
Can anyone suggest what would be a fair price for it? I know thats pretty vague question considering I'm not sure what it has, so lets just say a price for the basic machine, with a indexable cutter holder.
I have no idea what would be a fair price to offer.
appreciate any thoughts on this
thanks

Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

Thanks Simon
Its pretty sad. He used to be a very clever bloke, did a lot of wood working, metal working, foundry. Restored old cars and bikes. Couple of old cars (In talking 1913ish) all he had to start with was an engine +gearbox+ radiator shroud, chassis and suspension and a couple of old photos of a similar car. He did just about everything himself. Made the timber frame for the body, made his own rolls and english wheel so he could then make the metalwork for the body. Taught himself how to do upholstery so he could do the seats and hood etc.
A lot of knowledge locked up in his head. He can remember clearly things from 70 years ago but most days doesn't even know his grand kids.
Physically he's in really good shape but they have to keep a close eye on him because if he gets the chance he goes walking and gets lost. Poor old fella.
I really don't know what would be worse. Being in great physical condition for the age but meeting new people every day or having all your wits about you and be falling apart physically.
Actually, thinking about it, I think I'd prefer the first one though I'd hate to become a burden for my family.

I listen to talk back radio, 3AW here in Melbourne. Seems every few weeks there's a call to look out for some one like that. There was one in the past week, went to get a local pizza around 7 - 8 p.m with all of $20 in his pocket, on foot. Took 24 hours to find him. Luckily it was a pretty mild night. 17Cish. This guy had been seen at Springvale Cemetery the following day, where he had plots of family. Managed to get there, just couldn't find home.
As to the cost of the grinder, it will take a little bit of time, but you can search completed listings in Ebay with the advanced search. You might find something similar there. Ray G and RC have bought T & C cutters in the past few years. They might let you know what they paid.
Good luck & best regards.
Phil.

I bought a CC T&CG located in Brisbane on ebay 18 months ago, paid $927.69 (I've just discovered that I can access all my ebay purchases back to 2011). I may have paid too much for it, I don't know, but this type of gear comes up for sale so infrequently around here that I wasn't going to let it go.
Its supposed to be a good one but I haven't played with it yet.

Thanks for the replies fellas.
The 3 grinders shown here (via links and a picture) are both larger than the one my Uncle has. I've got to get around there and have another look.

Price depends on a lot of things, condition, accessories, and so on, I'd guess between $600 and $1200 would be in the ball park. But that's just my wild guess.

I gave away an incomplete benchtop one in need of serious restoration. Can't get cheaper than that.
Condition and tooling determines basic value. Demand determines price. What price are you happy to pay that leaves you thinking it was fair to both parties?

And it is still in good hands! Thanks again Peter!
As it happens, just today I needed to use it and to be able to had to complete the T-bolt locks for my centres. Now it is REALLY useful.
The photo does not show the swiveling subtable I made, nor todays effort of fitting the centres, sorry. This is just to give the OP an idea of the smaller CC T&C grinder.

I have a the same quandry... I will be getting rid of my small TC grinder, but have no idea of price, especially since it has no attachments..... The attachments for it were all way too big for it, so I am using them on my Macson TC grinder where they fit really well...
It is pretty much as new still, ex government I was told...ball roller ways on the long axis... 415V but fitted with a 240V VFD..
No idea what to ask as without attachments they are not worth much... But it is a versatile machine even with basic stuff you could make for it...Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.
