Based on that last photo I'm thinking Chinese lathe made for the German market and now the surplus is being sold off here.

Supposedly a German design made in China to higher than average standards.
Looks like any other Chinese lathe to me, although the finish seems a bit better.
If you're going to spend that sort of money on a Chinese lathe near that size, you'd be better off going a few more $$s and getting the Sieg C8.
RobThe worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

I thought we did this one before , but maybe it was else where maybe ?
Seems they are a big mob and 9/10 sales are to previous buyers. Thats gotta say something?
If I remember correctly some casting was Asian but completion was in Europe.

Quantum and Optimum is one and the same German company. Think of it like a German "Hare&Forbes" dealer that sells his own mixed house brands. They claim to employ a quality assurance fellow (one) at the chinese factory that makes this lathe and other machines that get badged "Quantum" or "Optimum". That is not sufficient to make the products "German". The dealer and importer is German though. Chris

Better quality
The lathe I bought (after ridding myself of the abysmal Hafco AL-250) is a re-badged Optimum Maschinen. A little deeper googling (as CBA - Melbourne has obviously done) reveals there are a number of re-badged Optimum/Quantum lathes - although some seem to come with no accessories, not even steadies. The difference in quality between my previous lathes and the Optimun Maschinen I eventually bought is very obvious. I considered the C8, which has a number of innovative features and is reviewed at Review: Sieg C8 Lathe, but the extra $s and the lack of being able to actually see and touch one put me off. Perhaps the innovative features mentioned in the review above will tip someone in favour of the C8 as the better quality of the Optimum did me.
