Sorry to hear that, but them's the breaks. We've probably all been had like that. Just be thankful you didn't pay a deposit!!!!

I bought another Waldown High Speed drill that was for sale the other day for a fair bit more money than that one was going for. I saw the one you missed out on and thought 'damn, that's a fair bit cheaper'. But I hesitated due to the condition. A little bit of investigation and it looked like it had a hard life. I found a photo of its condition that the original owner posted when he first acquired it. Apparently it was sweating inside a container for a number of years.
Sure, everything is fixable and a bit of rust isn't the end of the world. They come up from time to time. But another will come and even if it's a couple hundred more you might end up way better machine that won't need as much work. But I know your pain nonetheless.

I just picked up two Waldown high speed drills, an H and a later NH. Both 12000 rpm.
Both are 3 phase, cosmetically ok and no rust, but I can feel play with the quill sleeve in the head. The NH has more play while it is hard to feel it in the H.
What I don’t get is how would there be zero play? There is no adjustment that I can see. The sleeve doesn’t appear worn but it may be...
Am I missing something?

As far as I can tell, there is no adjustment. On mine neither....maybe they were just meant to be maintained regularly...
Cheers
