Default What brand is this Euro milling vise?

    Welcome back viewers...

Does anyone know what brand of vise this gold thing is? The machine in the photo is an Aciera F3.

I am intrigued by the vertical crank
    Thanks,

    Default Never mind...it's a...

Swiss made Gressel I gather. An earlier version of their Gripos vise. Their slow-loading catalogue shows their new vice does away with the bevel geared handle.

No idea on the brand, but I wonder if the vice operates on a cam or a crank, in a quick action sort of configuration...

No idea but I have seen a similar one mounted on a Hermle.

That particular one that I pictured operates on a bevel, and its a conventional screw type vise. Their current version is hydraulic, and not quite as elegant:

    Hi Greg
That is a really robust looking vise, almost takes up all of the table. Does it have a ratchet type of fitting incorporated in the handle as it looks like it could be awkward to operate without one.

I'm afraid that I have zero information on it as it is a superseded model from what my Googlevestigation reveals. One of their current models lacks the crank, but the handle only turns 160 degrees so it clears the table anyway. Another of their models has the vertical crank as an add-on feature.

Anyway, I had heard of a few Euro vices but not this company. Apparently they cost breathtaking money.

I think the gold one would be perfect for my FP1, but alas I will never know.

    G'day Greg,

I can't say I can add any info about the vice itself but I did remember seeing a similar one on ebay a while ago.
Just did a quick search and found it:

Allmatic type 160 High Pressure Hydraulic Vice Milling Machine Vice | eBay

It's been listed a few times and he started off asking more than a gorilla but looks like it didn't sell again and he's down to half that now.
If you really want one it might be worth making him an offer, it certanly looks to be in good nick.
The 300mm opening sounds handy but at 71kg it would be a bugger to lift on and off your table.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

This is a Swiss Gressel "mechanically operated high pressure machine vice". It is still listed in my 1995 BRC catalogue (BRC is the largest Swiss tool merchant). It was made in 4 widths, 100 125 160 and 200mm. Apparently you can preselect the pressure force on a round scale by means of a hex key. The horizontal lever is an optional accessory and can be installed or removed with just 2 inhex screws. According to the blurb a premium class vice, quick clamping without force and within 1.5 handwheel revolutions, no pressure drop, absolute parallelity, packet clamping for multiple workpieces or for flexible workpieces, indexable baseplate height (when using multiple vices side-by-side....), ground and hardened baseplate......

I think you may be very interested in the price list from 1995 that I have:
    Gressel MHS100 SFR 1,780, MHS 125 SFR 2,275 , HS 160 SFR 3,030, MHS200 SFR 5,320
The optional Vertical handle drives are SFR 406, 510, 535, 1,440. Of course there also is an optional pneumatic drive and a pile of nice different jaws........

One Franc is roughly one AU$, has been that way since the early 90's. If your vice is the 200mm, it did cost almost 3 times as much as my whole milling machine.

I personally have a Gressel bench vise, with dovetailed slide, bought new 30 years ago, and I LOVE it. Chris

Thanks for the link. i had seen that vise and thought it too big for my mill, and too expensive as well. In my reading over the last couple of days it seems like the Gressel is better liked than the Altimatic.

I have a GMT vise as well as a German Rohm. I like the Rohm better and now wonder about the other Euro offerings.

So, $3500 for that 6" vise almost twenty years ago. No wonder I had never seen one before.

Thanks very much for the added info and the price list.

Normally I am pretty careful about the two different spellings, but on that post I was thinking of someone else, hence the lapse
