    Default Wing Industries

Recently I was successsful, some have implied extremely fortunate, in winning a surface plate at auction . The plate was made by Wing Industries from Box Hill in Victoria. The full details are in this thread:

    http://www.woodworkforums.com/f127/r...-basis-161757/

Does anybody have information about the company as I have been unable to turn up anything on the net?

    Thank you.

    Regards

    Hi Paul,

I know nothing about Wing Industries but what a win! That table base might just galvanise me into doing something about my surface plate that sits crated on the shed floor. Love the third wheel.

    Thanks Bob

Just half a turn raises the legs about 10mm to enable moving the trolley around. You may be able to see enough from the pix already posted, but if you need more detail let me know.

Nice one, it at least looks to be in good nick, unlike most of the others I've seen on Grays.
I drove past there most days for about 10 years from 84 on, but it seems they were gone years before that. I assume you have seen this?
    WING" Gauge & Instrument Co.

"I plan to use it for sharpening mainly"
Couldnt you get a $60 Carba-tec plate for your sharpening and save the good one as a reference for scraping your planes flat?

Do you have some closer pictures of the height gauge?(just so you feel bad I paid $250 for my 600mm height gauge alone with out a box). There seem to be some strange things going on. Like there is a second clamp for fine adjustment but there seems to be no thumb wheel for it.

Any additional photos would be appreciated Paul.

It was interesting reading Stu the Sleuth's link. 9 hours to the gallon!

It was an extravagance and I am eargerly looking for ways to fully utilise the table. The fact is that it is good for one thing only and that is precision work that does not damage the surface!

It does provide a good reference for other things like my 12mm plate glass sheet etc. Yes the carbatec offering would be quite adequate and I have considered it.

The gauge is only 450mm ( and 18"). The gauge was quite difficult to photograph as the light kept reflecting off the surface. Some more pix for you to consider.

From your link this must have been one of the last offerings from the Victoria address.

    Regards
    Paul

Here you are . I think the split pin above the wheel could be a little more robust, but otherwise it is magic particularly with the flat spot on the cam which lets the wheel rest in position.

I skimmed through the link for Wing's addresses and will have to revisit for the motors.

    Thank you Paul.

My excuses for leaving my plate crated are starting to look real thin.

Here is a link to some Mitutoyo height gauge photos showing the adjuster that appears absent on the Kanon. http://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/mi...9/#post1291874

The scribes with their light surface rust look a lot worse in the photos for some reason than in reality. I spent 30 seconds with some steel wool. .

    So Paul,

When you have a spare minute could you have a fiddle with the gauge to see if there is some sort of fine adjustment incorporated into the carriage or slide. I can't imagine that the top section functions as a stop.

Me either having seen your other links.
I'd thought it might have been a one off.

    Stuart and Bob

You have been very persistent with this adjustment thingy. You are right and wrong. The knurled wheel at the top is purely for calibration, but I am coming to the conclusion that a venier guage is a little like a woman: There is so much going on at the front that you tend to ignore the back until a lot later .
