Machine freight Adelaide to Sydney - advice please
After lots of looking for a small T&C grinder or similar, I decided to expand the search envelope and have just committed to purchase a Macson bench surface grinder located in Adelaide.
The seller is happy to fasten it to a pallet, remove and box up handles etc and cover it up for transport to Sydney. I will probably also ask for the head to be lowered on to a block of wood on the table.
With previous mixed experience of arranging freight from places interstate, I am looking for wisdom (or warnings) on the best way of organising the freight.

Freight
There is far more freight moved East to West so the reverse movement is usually a lot cheaper. I'd try some of the large interstate freight companies once you know dimensions and weight of the article. Getting it from the Sydney depot to your workshop may be the expensive part.

It sounds like it will easily fit on a pallet. That's important because a lot of general freight companies, charge for floor space by the pallet.
It will cost you a lot less if you can just get it from depot to depot. It should fit on a 6 x 4 trailer or a ute. If your Adelaide guy can do that for you, and you pick a carrier with a depot on your side of town.
As long as it's not a large multi national, if you can find a smaller company, that still has the owner at the helm, offering them CASH on pick up, often works wonders. It also wouldn't hurt to mention, that your just a bloke, that found this machine on Ebay, just because you all ways wanted one. Make it known its a private buy, not a commercial one.
You could try Adelaide Express transport, They have tailgate loaders running around Adelaide, that could do the pick up that end. They also run to Sydney.

I have used E-Go to ship stuff from Melbourne with no problems they picked it up from the ebay seller and I picked it up from the local depot
I also sent a surface grinder to Melbourne and they picked it up from my shed.

I have used E-Go now about 5 times to get stuff from Melbourne to Bairnsdale.
Not only were they cheaper by at least half of anyone else, But they pick-up and
drop off within 5min of the time they said they would. No waiting all day when you could be working.
The other thing I would like to say about them is...................
The last time I used them I had to put the pressure on as it was a Greys auction and the pick-up
window was absolutely ridicularse..YES I ment to spell it that way. And after a frantic email to E-Go they
actually rang me, Instructed me to breath, Calm down and they would sort out the whole mess.
Well to my surprise I had my item the following morning from Adelaide and at half the quoted price.
The refund was overnight..
Now don't get me wrong I have no interest in this company other than being an extreamely happy customer.
When you get service that is second to none, And you don't have to sell your first born to pay for it
telling the world is my way of saying thanks.
Hope this helps you.

Hi Matt,
How do you get on with Grays printing the paper work that E-go want? and packing etc? I have a feeling you are going to cost me money
I've also used e-go a few times, certainly cheap. I've only had one issue, I paid for redelivery* and to be signed for but it was left at the front door**.
Stuart
*I'm sure I've had truck drivers not even bother to come to the front door and just put a card in the letter box. Not saying they were e-go drivers, just that if I pay for redelivery they know they will be back tomorrow lol)
**even though I was home and was inside at the time, I just happened to hear the guy.

Cost you money I will...
As soon as E-Go now that it is a Greys Auction they will send you an email asking for a good time to
phone you, Once you have advised them they will call you and get the details and at the same time give you their fax number, OR if its easier for you an email address so you can forward the Greys winners email and reciept email to them. NOW the reason I prefer to do it by FAX is E-Go needs a letter from you autherising them to collect on your behalf and this MUST be signed.. I hate trying to scan and send so for me sending a fax with all pages is just easier..
Anything that may need packing will be put into an appopriately sised box or bag(cost is negligable if at all) believe it or not Greys do usually put loose things into a box if being collected by courier. And anything large(depending what it is) they will just pop a lable onto it.
I had E-Go collect a VFD for me a while ago, And they labled it, Then wraped it 2inches thick with pallet wrap and then labled it again... And it came from Sydney on the passenger seat of the truck because they thought it might get broken in the back..
So yeah I'm gunna cost you money... HeehehehehehehehehehWarning Disclaimer

Hi,
A couple of years back I spent some time looking for a courier. The way I read most of there insurance policies they excluded pretty much everything and it was then their option to pay a claim or not. I also seemed to be able to find horror stories about every courier company out there. I think you can only insure the cost value not replacement. Most of the things I get couriered the cost is a very small part of replacement. With sign on delivery I figured they had to deliver something lol. That and cross my fingers.
Thanks for the info Matt....... I think lol

I've used e-go twice to send heavy or large goods. Very happy with the ease of use and price. Depot to depot is very cheap.
Cheers.
Vernon.

This forum just keeps giving, so thank you all for sharing your experience.
I am still waiting for the palletised size and weight before I can actually get any quotes: E-Go is on the list, but I have in mind the warning from .RC.
Insurance is usually a must for me (thanks Sir S for the reminder).
Matt's info about using E-Go for Grays auctions poses a serious threat to the shed budget deficit, only saved by the fact that the little Macson surface grinder (which at this stage will not fit into the shed) is definitely absolutely and unconditionally my last big purchase. Sez he.
Cheers,
Bill
