Best place to buy caustic soda in Adelaide
Hi all,
I need to buy about 10 kg of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) for a metal cleaning/stripping job.
Any one got a good source at reasonable cost (not Bunnings please) in Adelaide ?
Cheers

An industrial cleaner supplier should have it.... I purchased a bag from a local supplier here... Caustic Pearl it was called....

I think I got the last lot from a cleaning supplier. I will give them another go.
It's a bit pricey in small amounts so I want a bigger quantity.
The bro inlaw has got some in bags for paint stripping on furniture restoration, although I think it's not as widely used now as it gets into the wood and has to be neutralized.
Cheers

The likes of NALCO or GE Water sell it as a water treatment chemical and I believe they are in the phone book for SA. I'm not sure they would sell to members of the public these days, and particularly such small quantities.
Have you considered trying a plumbing supply (used to unblock drains). Just be careful as concentrated caustic soda is nasty as the material initially has a soapy harmless feel, however a very nasty burn is already occurring.
ORICA is also a majour supplier. Avoid the office, find a warehouse who might have a spoils pallet or be able to advise who of their customers might on sell to public. I know that these are normally guys who sell by the pallet, but they might if approached nicely help or give a lead.Last edited by Driftabout; 2nd Oct 2012 at 08:22 AM. Reason: extra thought

OK thanks for all the suggestions.
I will try out a few on price and see how it all pans out.
I think the pool supplies are mainly liquid.
The crystals/beads are what I've used before and work OK.
Cheers

Hi all,
Well I got my caustic soda for the best price from the suggestions, and after pricing from the ones mentioned, the winner is Omega Foods at slightly less than $3 a kg.
Ace Chemicals is much the same if you by 25 kg - which is more than I wanted.
The price for smaller lots from Ace skyrockets unbelievably.
So thanks for the Omega suggestion, not just because it was the best price, but because it's such a damn interesting store to poke around in - it's a bulk restaurant / Greek food supplies place.
Some great bulk buys to be had there - on all sorts of food items.
I finished up buying a few other things, including some terracotta wine coolers for 50 cents each - actually made in Greece. These are a sort of long tubular pot that presumably you soak in water and when ready you stand it on the table with your bottle of red in it and it cools from evaporation.
Anyway I thought they were kinda neat and bought two.
So thanks all, some great suggestions and a very interesting mornings wanderings.
Cheers
Rob
