    Default C & H variable speed motor.

Help needed. Has anyone had experience with these old units?
I have a C & H old Oz made mechanical variable speed motor/ gearbox which I am fitting to a wood lathe. The motor speed is 1440 and the output speed is 150 to 900 rpm. This has a gear reduction on the output side and it sounds quite noisy.
I used a larger unit years ago on a Wadkin RS and it didn't have the gear reduction and was quiet as I remember.
I have looked for a oil filler/drain but can't find one.
Does anyone know how the reduction gears are lubricated?
I don't want to go electronic as the way these work out you put the belt on the appropriate pulley for roughing and just nudge the hand wheel over with your foot as the dia comes down. Did 4 foot dia stuff on the RS.
Was turning some mag wheel patterns recently and this lathe was just too quick with a 1440 motor.
    H.
