Default Brown and Sharpe Grinder Manual sought

Machtool delivered Mike G's new pre-war Brown and Sharpe #2 surface grinder project the other day. It has joined the queue of projects awaiting attention in the shed. (Although some progress has actually occurred this week in that regard)

Before I fire up the oxy torch to disassemble the spindle I think a manual would be handy. Does anyone here know of one?

I would have some suitable spindle oil here if some is required...

    Just wanted to thank you.
Sometime back I was chasing info on Spindle Oil for my Churchill 18" by 6" reciprocating table Surface Grinder.
The closest modern equivalent to the "Velvus Three Oil" recommended on the spindle nameplate on the machine was Shell Morlina 10.
My machine was built in England & shipped to Australia in Aug 1950 & this may have been its first oil change.
You were a big help in assisting to track down this oil.
The job has been done & the machine seems very happy. All is operating very well.
    Thanks again

    Gregory,

Sadly no B and S No.2 surface grinder manual but should Mike's acquisitions extend to the universal grinding machines offered by that firm, the Nos 1,2,3 or 4, I have a 1945 operation and maintenance manual including illustrations of the repair parts.

Most probably no commmonality of parts between the surface and universal machines but spindle design might have some similarities. Have you looked in the catalogue, manual etc. forum on PM?

    Hi Bob...and RC

Re the oil...I have a 5 litre jug of Shell Morlina 10 that I bought for the Deckel, so we're good for this lifetime

Bob, I have seem some old threads on PM and HSM where manuals were offered by email but those are old threads. I will post over there though. I even tried the metal worker's dropbox which has hundreds of files with no luck. B & S made more than 15,000 of them, so I'm sure there's a manual somewhere.

    (this one is ser 6507)

Hi Greg, try Steve Lilliman, He is U.K. based and has an e-bay presence, but you can also e-mail him at this address, [email protected]. He is a very nice bloke, and while his manuals are reprints, the ones I have are good quality, and quite reasonably priced. He will send them as a .pdf file which saves postage, if you wish. Good luck,
    Rob.
