    Default Colchester Bantam

    Hi

I could have bought one of these recently..a Mk 1 long bed version in good condition , but without much tooling or accessories . It ended up selling cheap , under $1k .

Does anyone here use one ? I've read that the cost of accessories for these lathes is rather exhorbitant eg steadies and other bits .

I would peruse your local papers for auctions or clearance sales . At the moment the way the economy is, it isn't worth manufacturing anything here . These older lathes seem to be around in good numbers right now , and affordable . And TAFE's seem to be getting rid of this kind of machinery , why I don't know . I am amazed at the amount of machinery that is not wanted anymore and is just chucked out or considered to be obsolete .

For us hobby types , it's a good time to buy .

I have one at work Mike and find it a very capable machine. A bit small for what I have to do hence the purchase of the Servian Brunswick lathe. Smooth as silk to use and at the end of the day it's capabilities are only limited by your imagination.

I've got a short bed version I'm in the process of setting up in the shed, a long bed version is so much more useful, by the time you have a D1-3 adapter on a 3 jaw chuck there's not a lot of room left between centres. Do you know if it's the metric or the imperial version?. You'll be able to buy third party chucks and toolholders etc., as well as fabricate a steady for it. I just swapped the motor over for another so I can run it off an inverter as the original two speed motor would be a nightmare to make into a delta wired motor.
