Cool Used HM-50 vice and acc's

Still looking at used machine trouble is he thinks it's worth new price. It's 18 months old he bought it ex GST and still claiming bought vice and acc extra the acc's are standard acc's that come with the machine including vice it's 18 month old back then they used to provide a vice (not a very good one ) the collet are whose cheap crap that come with the machine and a set of end mills. He must think that I come down in the last shower making claims like that PS the vice looks like a K type vice blue

    Hi Dave,
The vice can be o.k, you just need to remachine the jaw seats and i use mine off the swivel base unless i need it. the biggest pain though is the fact that the guides don't go all the way to the fixed jaw. I would just tell him the facts, if he doesnt like what you are saying its his loss. You could also show him this MILL (HAFCO) | eBay to give him an idea of what they are worth 2nd hand.

Thankyou for the info $2800 seems a fair price for one on E bay this year. Also I have to drive about 4 hours to get it. It would be slow trip carting that thing back he has to realise this, he has been trying to sell this for months, maybe better just wait for H&F have their 3day sale than waste time with this. David

That sounds like the original vise and like you say they only dropped this with in the last 12 months or less (rip offs) There is one on ebay at the moment new (4$200) and it comes with a vise as they always have, just another way for H&F to rip you off by excluding accessories.

The standard vise ways fall short of the fixed jaw so it wont hold a parallel close to the fixed jaw, so you will soon spot it. I agree it is not much of a vise, but it will get you going.
There are 2 ways the fix it, either add a spacer for the fixed jaw to bring the jaw out where the way ends (but you loose a bit jaw opening width) or machine out the bit where it's missing and add your own bit of cast or metal. On my first vise I just added a spacer.

Make him your top offer and if he says no, walk away. If you're going to pay close to new for a used machine, might as well have a new one instead.

Personally I'd get the HM52. One just sold in Ebay for around $2800. At least with that one you get a nice rigid horizontal spindle and (I assume) much slower spindle speeds to it. 2 angle plates made from heavy steel angle and you can fly cut or face mill pretty much anything with less overhang, forces transferred down to the table and the correct spindle speed. I made my angle plates by bolting the steel to the table, face milling one surface, flipping over and milling the other. This gives a nice finish and accuracy in line with the machine itself. If you don't end up with a right angle, time to look at the column to table squareness....

I've got one of those blue vises as well. It was free to me and that was the correct price. Mine is so badly out that it's a joke and it was new when I was given it (my machinist guy refused to even mount it on the mill). Once I get my granite surface plate home, it's going to be the first item I attack. I can hardly make it worse.
