Brown and Sharpe Taper tooling for mill
I saw that machine in Perth quite nice but a litte on small size other problem enquired about tooling in B & S taper they just laughed so I think it might be hard to obtain tooling with that taper

Yeah give that one a miss. The only time I would consider a machine with that taper, is if it came with a heap of tooling already.

Nice little jig borer but hopefully nobody buys it as a milling machine, would be a shame to see it get wrecked, unless they are using it for extremely light work such as model making in brass or aluminium. For jig boring it probably has most of the tooling it needs as the sale includes a set of imperial collets and a couple of drill chucks. Just needs a small boring head or two. Not much call for a jig borer these days with digital readouts on mills.

You could always make a small ER series collet chuck to fit the B&S taper and just use the collet chuck to hold your end mills. Leave the chuck in the spindle...Bob

ER to fit Browne & sharpe taper
Hi there Bob thankyou for suggestion would this be a complex project to make or modify the ER to fit the BS taper I have been looking at the HM48 milling machine at Hare & Forbes which has 3MT spindle bore not bad if you can get a good one I have a AL 336 lathe I have had no problems with it of coarse the Elliot is much better built than the chinese mill David

You could also use a ER chuck with a strait shank into the B&S collet, though it would hang out a bit.
I see your looking at the HM48 which is up around the price of a HM50. Since your not into model making, the HM50 is a much more rigid machine.

Are you looking at the one with or without the DRO?
I just had a look and wow, there prices are going up when the dollar is still down. Just think when the dollar dives down to around 60 cents we will be paying around 10 grand for these machines going at this rate. Bloody rip offs, they know they have the market cornered and can put whatever price they want on them.

The one Iam looking at is manual machine no fancy bells and whisles have seen a secndhand HM50 he currently wants three grand it's 18 months old like new he will come down in his price as at that price he will not sell it have spoken to him before at christmas time he wanted $3500 not a hope in hell of selling it it the fella I know H & F more like $2500 because out of warranty want you want and what the market will pay decides the price. If you get it for $2500 it would be a good price, even $2700-2800.
I think you would be happier with it in the long run, but like most of us, price comes into it.
If your not in a hurry you might find a second hand mill, have you thought about running a wanted add for a few weeks? Often you will get guys coming out of the wood work that don't want to sell to dealers, etc.

A vice (depending on make and size) could be $100 or more, a ER collet chuck (with collets) is say $400, a clamp kit is typically $130 upwards.
If all that is included then you are probably saving having to pay around $600+ to tool up, so not a bad deal.

Only one problem it's not in Perth it's in the bottom end of WA would cost fortune to get it back to Perth it would be cheaper to just go to H & F and buy a new one
