Default Which Shaper does this vice belong too?

I noticed this shaper vise is in an upcoming auction

Workbench Surface Table With Vice - Lot # 60

There is no shaper in the auction so perhaps this is a chance to reunite a shaper with its vise.

    Anybody know what it suits?

OMG I cant edit the subject and change vice to vise

Could be off an Elliot. Top half looks very similar to mine, though the base is different. Go hard Ray!

PS: Oh my, look at all the goodies!

I actually wanted the bench and not the vise which looks too big for my Douglases. I don't much see the point of getting into bidding war. Want to do a deal on the bench?

    Hi Eric,

Let's take this discussion off the forum. It's not fair to the seller or anyone else to discuss in a public open forum..

    I'll send you a PM.

    Regards

Thanks for posting this. Is anyone going to this auction with a spare tonne and half of trailer space? Pretty please?

    Hi GQ,

I'll be planning a road trip (maybe) , but my current intention is to just take the ute.. I'd have to get a hire trailer, but I'm sure something can be worked out.. call it plan B for now.

I'm a bit offput by the fact that they don't have loading facilities.

    Regards

Yeah, me too. Reckon that MoriSeiki would be more than a two man lift?
Or that bent spindle grinder? Or that De Valliere lathe?

What's with all the Indian made lathes? Were they a school standard?

Looks very similar to the one on my Alba... correct me if I am wrong but I believe Elliotts were sold as Albas or vice versa (pardon the pun).

I have seen many vices like this, probably a generic pattern and the base is changed to suit different machines.

On closer inspection it looks like Elizabeth (SA) Tafe is closing down. Something is wrong here. Nobody from a traditionally working class suburb wants to get their hands dirty? Government funding cuts? Carbon tax biting?

Yet employers lament the 'skills shortage'. This country is rooted. Grab the gear while you can!

Four of our customers (engineering/fabrication) pulled the pin just before Easter. Keep your ear to the ground, there is going to be a lot of cheap gear in the next couple of months......

My understanding is that Elliotts came after Albas (more a next generation thing)

I don't think Elizabeth TAFE has done much metal trades stuff for some time. The efficiency gurus are going through a consolidation phase and so will concentrate resources in one place. I tried to find a welding course in Adelaide - around 5 or 6 TAFEs to chose from, and only one had a course. That it's 30 km away doesn't seem to worry anyone.

My 1930's Alba 2S has 'Alba 2S' cast into the gear wheel cover and has and a 'Elliott Machine Tools' badge riveted to the other side... maybe mine is a transitional model.

Regardless of the name it is a beautiful machine and doesn't get the action it deserves, but is kept dry and well oiled.....

    Hi All,

Well, I can answer the original question.. the vise belongs on a Varnamo.. (well at any rate it does now.. )

Eric (aka LamestLama) has laid claim to the work bench, looks a bit like it's a solid steel top? Should be a handy thing.

But, at last I have a real shaper vise..

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks, I'm going to pick it up next week, so I won't know how the spacing lines up with the t-slots until I get it home.

Thanks for the offer of help with collection by the way, I appreciate the thought

The auction sale terms say that you have to pick up within two working days or risk forfeiture of the goods, but then goes on to say that you can pay by BPAY, ( which I did, ) but to allow 48 hours for payment to clear before you can collect?

However, for this particular auction, they have designated pickup times, next week 9-3 on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday... must be in the fine print somewhere...

    Regards
    Ray
