Interesting Lathe-Mill Combination
HI,
I was just Browsing on Practical Machinist and came across a Link to a Dainichi Lathe-Mill Combo. It has Finished on Ebay now,but here is the Info from Ebay
DAINICHI MODEL UNIVERSAL 36A BED GAP LATHE
VERTICAL MILL MADE ON THE LFT END OF THIS UNIT
SWING OVER BED IS 20"
SWING WITH BED REMOVED 30"
INCH AND METRIC THREADING
52" CENTER TO CENTER
PASS THRU 3 JAW CHUCK
UNIT IS 3 PHASE BUT THE LATHE MOTOR HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SINGLE PHASE. JUST NEED TO BOLT A 3 PHASE MOTOR ON AND IT READY FOR 3 PHASE
VERTICAL MILL DOES HAVE SHAPING WITH A 12" STROKE
30 TAPER ON MILL
QUILL DIA. IS 3"
IT DOES HAVE FACTORY POWER TABLE FEED
I ALSO HAVE THE CENTER REST AND THE FOLLOW REST
I DID MODIFY THE BED A LITTLE TO SWING SEMI TRUCK WHEELS. IT DOES AFFECT ANYTHING ON THE LATHE . I DO HAVE THE BED GAP ITS JUST NOT PICTURED. THIS LATHE WAS BUILT TO BE PUT IN TOOL ROOMS ON SHIPS. I HAVE USED IT OFF AND ON FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS AND IT WORKS GREAT WITH VERY LITTLE WEAR. IT WAS DIRTY WHEN WE TOOK PICS IT HAS SINCE BEEN CLEANED AND READY TO GO.
There was No Bids on Ebay, but the starting Bid was $2,000.00. The Listing ended, because the Item is no longer available.

I'm struggling to see how that's possible. I suspect the seller is confused. He doesn't appear to be up on machining terminology.
I DID MODIFY THE BED A LITTLE TO SWING SEMI TRUCK WHEELS.
Shame. Appears to be a sturdy machine and certainly unusual. Bound to be some design compromises involved but still...

Hi Bryan,
Look behind the mill table in the second picture. that thing between the Z ways(the table z not the head) is that clapper box.

HI,
Well Spotted Stuart, I think You're right too. When I seen Shaper in the Ebay listing eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices I thought, Oh he means a Slotting Attatchment. However I just went back over the Pictures and if You look at Picture N0. 2 there is a Telescopic Tube (feed Shaft ?) which goes to the lower part of the Table.
Then have a look in Picture N0. 4 at the Controls on the Oval shaped control box I Zoomed in and could just make out the Four Words 'SHAPER TABLE ??? FEED' . In the same Picture the Control in the very upper right of the Picture says 'Shaping Off' .
I Googled the Company and it is still Going Company Profile . There is some Info on LathesUK, but not much Page Title .All The Best steran50 Stewart

Ok I'm Officially Impressed that they crammed all that into one machine. And it makes sense for the confines of a ship. Yes I guess an enterprising and skilled person could repair the bed. And for a couple of grand it might even represent good value, especially for someone with limited space. I'd rather have separate machines, but I think it's kinda cool.

Stewart,
I have a feeling that I have read something over the last few years regarding these machines being designed for the US NAVY for space saving in their war ships..I am assuming that other countries would also have similar machines as well..
Anyways just thought I would share.

Combo machine.
Greetings chaps. O think that one big drawback would be the height of the milling table. You would have to be a midget or dig a hole to get down to it. The marine application is reasonable but ships engine rooms did have fairly large areas on the side. You would want to put this beastie in as the ship was being built. I am afrai I am in favor of to machine for each task in a workshop. Where was the beastie located. Yours 4-6-4
