Default half round rod for split pins

    Dear All

My tractor has a dozen or so split pins that are about 12mm diameter. I have had trouble buying replacements in the right size and length. I make replacements by getting 19mm-ish (or bigger if possible) rod and cutting it lengthwise with angle grinder to produce half round. I then bend it to split pin shape etc but is tedious and not very nice looking. Any ideas for making half round rod of this diameter on lathe? I can make small diameter half round (5mm or so) by spiraling a length of it around a 25mm-ish rod and then just turn it down on lathe and than unwrap it. But this would not work with stuff 20mm+ thick.

Should have checked post first. I use 12-13 mm rod to make split pin by cutting lengthwise - not 19mm

Wonder if you could mount up some 12x6mm flat bar in a 4 jaw, offset so that one of the 12mm wide faces rotates on centre height?

Here's a variation on that idea...

How about tack welding two pieces of 12x6 together to make 12x12 and put it in the 4 jaw turn it round, then grind off the welds..
You'd get twice as much half round for the effort...

PS or even better just buy them off ebay, as GQ suggests.

thanks for ideas. I never got a result searching split pins - did not think to search cotter pins..they look the go. In the interim, I will have a go turning two tacked 6x12 flats and see if viable.

I only searched cotter pins because I grew up in North America-I always forget to call them split pins here.

I'm wondering if you want to pursue this idea whether you would be better with 2 pieces of 10x6 tacked together. With 12x6 once you have it round you've just taken off all your weld. The chance of the tool tip snagging on the corner of a long thin bar is increased once that weld has gone and the next step is probably a couple of half round bas pulling out of a chuck and decorating the environment in some frustrating and potentially damaging way.

I'm not sure where on your tractor you want the split pins - but are have you considered linch pins (was mispelt as cinch- thanks big shed)(typically used on 3 point linkages and implements but also found in other places). These should be readily available in the range of sizes from any agricultural machinery dealer. Far more are sold to replace lost ones than any broken from fatigue.

Don't know what you use the split pins for, and don't know what cinch pins are, but on my tractor the 2 types of pins used are

    Linch Pins

    and

    R Clips

    Default Pins on my tractor

My tractor is a MF50 Industrial Backhoe - the split pins are used to locate each ram. My other tractors (grey Fergie and MF35) use the other pins on 3PL etc

You could always not turn down the section you welded, or weld it on the ends... depends on how long a piece you want to do, I guess...
