300mm dig caliper
hi all,i need to aquire a 300 mm digital caliper to measure up a new product and will only use this maybe 30 times or so.I am looking at the moore and wright unit for aroun180 and the kingcrome unit for the same amount. Can anyone suggest another unit or recommend these for occasional accurate use(im a boilermaker not a turner so use will be minimum),thanks and cheers, danny

Sadly in a case like this you are paying for the length and it's ability to measure within 0.05mm over that whole length. 300mm is long enough that they are not a "everyone has one" type tool and the price will reflect that.
If you only have to measure around 300mm can you buy a 150mm one and make up a jaw extension, so that you still have the accuracy but it's only over a range of say 225mm to 375mm? I think I've seen the cheaper ones of those go for around the $50 on special.

I would recommend a dial vernier instead. I have a cheap 300mm one but I just don't trust it over the full range, so I think a dial one would be the go as it's mechanical.

I tend to agree with Dave, I have a couple of really nice mitutoyo 300mm dial calipers for not much more than $200. Well worth the up front $'s

thanks matt,no problems.i would much prefer a dial but i dont need the accuracy and to be honest,i have a mitutoyo 150mm dial and love it but this new job just needs to measure 276mm +.25mm -.25mm and id like to see the measurement without putting my script glasses on,just being lazy i suppose.we wil see tomorrow how good the CT brand is,if not i,ll spend the extra and get another brand.cheers danny

I have a cheap 300mm one I bought 5-6 years ago that cost me about $55, and some days it's good and other days it plays up, it was fine for the first 3 -6 months.
I am reckon the ebay guy sets them like this so it's to late to leave negative feed back, LOL
You would think by now they would have a more reliable system for the verniers, especially the high end ones. They are charging a lot more money but your not really getting much more in the terms of quality over the cheap ones.
Something like a miniature glass scale digital vernier would be nice. The glass could still be set into the stainless for durability.
Will be interesting to see what these ones are like, who knows he may sell a few sets to guys here if they turn out OK.
