Brown and Sharpe Turret Lathe 1865
In the Musee again. Superb finish. I picked up a book a couple of years ago about Samuel Colt and his firearms. There are period photos of some of the machines he used. I'm pretty sure this was one of them.

Now thats a coolant system!
The chuck is interesting, cross between a 3 jaw and a collet?
Anyone got any ideas as to whats going on with bars that look like a spindle backstop but with some cord and a big weight?

condition
It is in top condition. My guess is: it has been restored by highly paid museum conservators/technicians , using modern equipment. It probably would have been in a rusty state before renovation . When it was 30 years old in 1895 it is likely it was junked and left derelect..... unless the French thought ahead 100 years and covered it in oil after it was taken out of service. As there isn't one speck of pitting on it, maybe it's all new steel , made to replicate the original MIKE

Hi Mike,
I'm not so sure about all that. I'm amazed at some of the shows on tv where that go into factories that were built in the late 1800's and the machines are still there, some still operating. One example that comes to mind, Tower Bridge finished in 1894, coverted from coal and steam to electricity in 1976. I think all the steam plant is still there. Of course the lathe may have been rebiult 15 times . as the old saying goes "best axe I ever had, its only had 6 new handles and 3 new heads"
Ray,
That would be my guess. I hope it doesn't spin with the spindle. But, if it doesnt spin with the spindle would you need 4 handles?
They might have had a couple of 8 year old boys collecting the oil drips.
Bar feeder sounds right with a stop on the capstan. (I'd been looking for a stop of some sort out the back.)

It does look very highly finished. I'm a bit skeptical about it originally looking like that. Looks to me like it's been got at by an 'enthusiast'.
