Thread: Light Duty Metal Linisher
-
23rd Jun 2017, 10:25 PM #31
I know this is an old thread but I've decided to buy one of H & F's linisers while they are still on sale
probably the BS 48 model, just a question on what grades of belts do people find the most usefull
for general use on steel and the occasional brass?

It depends on how much you want to remove, I use mainly 60 and 80 grits which leave a reasonable finish, I keep the older belts for a finer finish, they're not as aggressive a cut. I also use mine for sharpening drill bits and shaping wood.

Hi Kryn,
the kind of use I'm thinking of is the rounding the ends of 10x 30mm steel bar with a 15mm radius, just an example,
wasn't sure if 40 grade would be too aggressive,

60 or 80 will do the job very nicely, 40 grit is REAL rip it off stuff, I don't think I've ever gone that coarse. For Brass I presume you want to polish it? In which case I'd go for the Scotchbrite belts, all this can be gotten from The Sandpaper Man, he's in Qld and is a sponsor on the Woodwork Forums, you'll find them under the listing of Sponsors Forum almost to the bottom of the WWF page.

I have the Multitool 914 X 50 mounted on an A & A 8" grinder with a wire brush on the LHS. I don't run the disc on the Multitool, too small for my liking.
Also have a 16" drum sander that I run steel through to clean off the old paint occasionally, a Woodfast 12" disc sander. and an Ozito portable belt sander.
I listed them all, coz I wasn't sure which one you were referring to.
