    Default Rong Fu RF712

Last weekend my Father called to say he had found a good bandsaw at an old engineers home workshop sale. As I already have a small power hacksaw I was not super keen, but said if he could get it for a good price to grab it.

He payed $150 and I hitched the trailer for the trip to Melbourne not knowing what I had bought. I was very pleased to find a Rong Fu 712 complete with suds. It is a bit dirty but is in very good condition with only hobby use.

while I was there I also picked up some nice heavy duty clamps, a surface gauge and a mag base with a dial gauge all for $20.

    Photos to come...

    Cheers

    Piers,
A good find and I'm sure it will serve you well. Mine is now 20+ years old, the problems I've had are mainly the suds tank which is plastic that cracks in the corners (all 4) and leaks. Some metal set on a roughed up surface seems to hold OK. Gearbox needed an internal clean, new seal and refill with a know oil, original stuff seemed a bit light weight. Guide rollers will ultimately wear tracks, but they can be reversed to extend the life a bit. Alan.

Thanks to Phil (Machtool) I picked up these 2 surface plates for $150 each.
    One is branded France
    .

One is 1000x630x100, and the other is 900x630x75mm.

    Alan,

thanks for the info about the saw. Mine is also about 20 years old. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to get out into the shed to fire it up....

Dave, well done on the surface plates looks like a great purchase. A larger plate is defiantly on my wish list.

    Cheers

    Dave,
    You lucky bugger,
Many years ago I went to an auction for a close of engineering business, there was a nice Starrett surface plate, still had the cardboard over it. Had not been used, stupidly I didn't bid. Why oh why, I luckily have a friend who works at Hardiman gear cutting. He ground on both sides a slab of 75 by 400 steel that I had, not quite the same but better than nothing.
    Cheers

    Thanks Piers and Bruce.

Bruce I will say I am lucky bugger, I didn't believe it until they where at my place, I am still in disbelief over getting them both for that price after chasing one for a while now, then get 2. I was starting to think about getting a Chinese plate from H&F.

On top of that they came from Brisbane and a best mate of mine brought them down as he does line haul in a semi. He had to borrow a ute up that end to pick them up as well.

I made a gentleman's agreement with the seller on Thursday to keep them until Tuesday, I really didn't expect them to be there when my mate turned up, but thankfully there are still some honest guys in this world as I have been stung many time over the years.

I was prepared to pay the original $200 he had on them before he dropped the price but my mate was on holidays, so getting them for $150 each and giving my mate $100 for his trouble still only came to the original price and all parties are happy.

I got done about 10 years back for $150 with a guy with a body kit for a commodore. I put a wanted add in, got an answer and put the money into the bank account and then nothing. He gave me the story he was an honest person etc and we spoke for a while.

I contacted the police and they found him quick as he was going through the papers doing it to lots of people so I wasn't the only one. The police prosecuted him and I could of got my money back through them, but it was tax payers money not his, so I just left it as a lesson learn't.

I did ask the police to give me 10 minutes with him, but they refused though he did say he would just get a slap on the wrist which frustrates them after all the work they put into convicting him as he had a history of scamming people.

Sad when we have these type of people among us.

Dave, great score on the granite. I cannot tell you how much agro I went through just for the privilege of paying almost $600 for similar plates last year for my fellow bargain hunters.

I got reamed for $500 on an ebay deal in New York three years ago. Bummer for the guy that I get free tickets and have a reason to be there anyway before the limitations expire. He owns a house in Rochester. Soon it may be mine. Too bad that he sent me so many emails admitting his mistake. I just might hire Dog the Bounty Hunter to collect, just to smell the taser smoke. I hear that it smells like victory.

Default Apropos to nothing at all...

...there is almost nothing that I find admirable in the American political system, but I do like, theoretically, the idea of electing judges for fixed terms. It tends to concentrate their minds on community standards, and community expectations.

Here we get magistrates for life. Often as not nominated by fat lesbian ex-social workers masquerading as state MPs. I do not get the notion of repeat offenders going free without a geriatric's walking frame. ie, throw away the key, at least for a few years. Let Bubba show them the error of their ways. After lights out.
