Another good score Andre What happened to the sockets?
Mike, you got a good deal their also.
I remember when I bought a Hercus years ago the guy said on the phone $750 and it comes with a box of tooling. When I got their (about 40 minutes) with the trailer I looked at the lathe and then asked about the tooling. He then said I want another $100 for the tooling. I questioned him about it and what he had said on the phone, but he said I could either take it or leave it, so I bought it. I think someone had phoned after me or he had spoken to someone in between time, but one of the things in the box was a new Sandvik boring bar with a pack of tips, along with a lot of new HSS, tool holders and other stuff.
It wasn't as much as you got, but I thought it was well worth the $100.
Some of the best deals come as part of a package.

he decided to give the sockets to his son instead of selling them.

Oh well, you still got a good deal.
I see Sidchrome 1/2 sets go on special all the time for around $180-$200.

Nearly 12 months ago my son bought a $2600 roller tool box full of tools, I think they retail for about $4000 and he has not had any problems with them at all. He uses them daily on cars, truck and buses.
I checked them over and the spanners are nice and are a little wider than the cheaper spanners, the sockets look fine as well.
I have a lot of Aus made Sidchrome and you can still split a socket, even though they are old quality ones.

Andre
I've used a few VBW tools over the years and I reckon they are pretty good. 25 years ago German made Gedore used to be good but the South African Gedore were not so good. (read - really not too good) Japanese Minimax of the same era were pretty good as well.
Years ago I picked up a small set of metric open enders plus 1 tube spanner which had been a OEM kit with, I believe an MAN diesel engine. what a great set of spanners they are. Can't think of the brand atm but excellent quality. (geez I love getting older with all the benefits that go with that. memory loss, arms getting shorter, reduced bladder capacity etc etc. lol)

good day all. funny you say that bollie about the man tool kit. mtu's used to come with 2 very impressive tool boxes. they had a torque wrench that could change heads from a ratchet or ring spanner. dial indicators spline sockets. off set and no off set spanners. Plus lots of the best quality German tools. All packed into two flat looking metal tool boxes with a big mtu embossed on the lid.
i wish i had one.

I remember one was around 1 1/4-1/2 and I was undoing a pinion nut on a holden diff and ended up splitting the socket, whether that is over working it or normal use I am not sure, as it was the right size for the nut.
Another one I can remember was a 9/16 and it split on a engine bolt.
Most if not all the ones I have ever owned where second hand, so who knows what life they had before that, but had worked for years before with no problems.I have split 3 from memory.
Some of those old Sidchrome sockets are a bit thin walled, but other than the few I have had broke, the rest are still going strong..

The only instances where I have had them give way is when I have used more means of leverage than standard,or when putting a shockload onto them ( I dont mean with a rattlegun).

With the 1 1/4-1/2 inch one I tack welded a 1 meter piece of square tube to the back of it because it was bending the 1/2 bars, so it was probably my fault, but the other 2 where done by hand.
I could not remove the pinion nut at all so ended up grinding through it with a cutting disk and splitting it into 2. It wrecked the centre but I didn't want it as it was high ratio and needed to get it out. The funny thing was it had already undone the other pinion with no problems.
I am not sure if I still have the 9/16 one, I will look around for it.

hi guys.
well lucky me i got a qctp to day with some holders for less than $100.
there is a place selling up near me and there was an old Japanese
lathe there in the paddock with a tool post so the guy was good enough to sell it to me. of course this is not dream land and the tool post does fit straight on but with one of two modi factions it all should be sweet.
there is an auction tomorrow in melbourne. lots of quality equipment and machines.pm me if you would like details. you see if you don't go to work good things happen
