Well done Bob, a really nice looking old drill. I have to agree with Bob and Brian, that is a project well worth doing, somehow an 18 volt battery drill doesn't have the same gravitas does it.

Congratulations Bob Ward on the Austolite drill acquisition - I was watching it getting cheaper and cheaper over the last few weeks but decided not to jump on it . Was a great buy and a lovely machine. What sort of handle was originally on it?

I can't say about the handle that will need a little research, post #20 in this thread shows a handle of simple construction.
Austolite drill press

2nd hand but never used a buy through WWF last year it was brought up by a friend last week.

Now to buy a mill me thinks.

Bought this bar bender at a deceased estate sale yesterday, C&R Products Model 2½. No idea of it's capacity but it seems to built like a brick outhouse, the base is 12" x 13", the bending plates are 4" high and the lever is 4' long. The bender itself (less the stand) weighs somewhere around the 100-120 kg mark. The anvil can be reversed to generate rounded or sharp bends. All the bolts are imperial so I'm assuming this is not an import - plus it looks too old for that.

If any knows who C&R Products are or were it would be interesting to find out more about them.

I finally bought home my Colchester Bantam from Torrens Island Power station IMG_20180307_180426.jpg. It has been more neglected and abused than used. Who even thought daubing it red was a good idea? It is missing its tailstock (if anybody knows where I might find something to fit or modify to fit let me know.

Aaw I dunno, I might be speaking heresy here to some peoples ears, but I reckon it doesn't look too bad in that colour. But, I like a colourful workshop. where as others like everything one colour or machines the original factory colour. I wouldn't paint it that colour but if it was mine I wouldnt be rushing in to change it either.
Hopefully its not flogged out.

I managed to inspect it before the auction and the spindle turned and all 3 axes moved fine. At full extension there was no play in the quill. A little rock on the table. About half a turn backlash on x & y. z was good.

The power plug had been snipped off so there was no way for greys to test it so I figured either it has an electrical issue or simply, the 'no plug' thing means they labelled it as unworking.

At any rate. I'll come home in two weeks time.

All comments and observations welcome. Yes, the vice is *enormous* and yes, those ways are all covered in some caked on cr*p! Underneath the carriage though I could still discern flaking. Fingers crossed.

Nothing very high tech here. A few months ago the Gatton dump shop had several hospital beds for sale. They were all in good condition, good construction, 4 lockable castors, the bed wound up and down from 400mm to 800mm and all for a lousy $25. I had no idea what I was going to do with one but a screaming deal is a screaming deal so I bought one and parked it in the corner.

Recently I need to get a big heavy lump (300kg+ Hudson straight 8) under the drill press and also be able to position it accurately, (for broken bolt and stud removal) so I decided to see just how tough a hospital bed is. First up I loaded the engine in the middle of the bed and the bed didn't poo itself. So far so good.

Then I got a bit more demanding and laid the engine on its side right at the very end of the bed and counterweighted the other end in case the whole shebang tried to over balance and do a face plant, 400kg+ all up, most of it on the front legs. And the bed was brilliant. I wheeled the bed with engine to the drill press, cranked the bed up and down to get the right height, manoeuvred it around on the castors to get the drill into position, got the job done. The novelty of having a hospital bed had worn off and I was begrudging the space it was taking, but now its a keeper

I guess it just means you needed to be more Patient LOL.

Thanks for that Bob, I had a chance to get one, but knocked it back because the electrics didn't work. I should reconsider it next time.
