The 24V globe was shot and I ended up adapting the light surround to take a nightlight style 240V 15W globe so I am using the sign as a pilot light to remind me the compressor is on.
The compressor is located outside the shed in a sound reduction enclosure on an independent 15A circuit so I switch it on inside the shed using the circuit breaker. What usually happens is I forget to turn the compressor off and it runs on/off until I notice it firing. I cannot hear the compressor from the house when it re-charges so I do not know it still on so sometimes it stays on for weeks on end and makes a lot of water.
Anyway I added a GPO on the same breaker as the compressor but right next to the breaker box and just plugged the sign into it. Then when I leave the shed - especially at night the sign will stand out pretty clearly and remind me to turn it off
The sign comes from an analytical instrument called an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. It was purchased in 1966 and decommissioned about 15 years ago and has say in a back room collecting dust. Last week it was scrapped and pulled apart. I managed to grab the sign and a couple of other bits and pieces. Unfortunately the sign had been dropped and I had to glue it back together again and not all the bits were there. On a personal note I used that instrument as an undergraduate in the early 70s.

The sign looks suitably ominous, it'd give someone who broke in pause, assuming they could read. I gave the brother an engraved acrylic sign, "Experimental Darkroom No.3".....He stuck on the toilet door in his flat.

Well I cant always be turning up gold nuggets. I paid $30 for this. Its worse the the pictures make it look. If I even get an ultrasonic clearner it the first thing going in it.
Turns out there are some more helmets available. PM me if you are interested.

So Stu,
Does having the Helios put you back into the lead in the "who has the most indicators" competition?

Hi Bob,
Not even close. Mike(?) has me beat twice over.
It has what appears to be jeweled but they are clear? and a shutter release lifter so thats a plus.

Well my tool gloat today is this Soco MC-370F Cold saw that i picked up this afternoon. 370mm blade, 2 speed, 3 phase 3hp motor. Excuse the poor photo quality, my DSLR has crapped it's pants.
It needs some work to bring it up to scratch as it was left outdoors - undercover but still exposed.
Needs a new trigger switch assembly, a few bolt on pieces of the vice need replacing, and removal of the surface rust. I'm planning on stripping it completely down, cleaning and re-assembling it. Doubt i'll repaint it, too much work.
Interesting that this saw will cut parallel to the jaws, still haven't worked out the real reason for that unless you wanted to section bar stock? *shrugs*
Cheers

I cant imagine the parts will be cheap
It would make a great(though somewhat large) dial gauge stand.

You should be capable of making a new quill with that big new lathe and you mill.
If you want to change it to something else, what about a tapping stand?

Thanks Dave, Ueee.
Ueee - Believe it or not the vice on this one doesn't swivel, it's fixed.
Dave J - I've been meaning to ask you - when are you going to post some photo's of your toolpost holders you've been making, you know the 40 something or other of the things? I have the same style (BR/BP from Hairy Forbes).
Eskimo - Nice score, always liked the Brobo/Waldown stuff, shame it's missing the important bits.
I'd imagine the cost of the replacement bits will far out weight the cost of even being able to buy a complete new machine if you could, still it's worth a shot
Cheers
Jon
