RC
you just want to hope that it isn't chilled cast iron. I tried some from a plough once. It was that hard I couldn't work it with carbide. 9" grinder cutting wheel did it hard and didn't last long. I was told by an old engineer that lower quality iron was used and deliberately chilled to give good wear properties.

I guess you could laay them in a nice fire and keep them orange hot for a couole of hours and then they should be 'unchilled' for machining....
Cheers, Joe
retired - less energy, more time to contemplate projects and more shed time....

Tiny reciprocating piston air pump
Not a tool, but this little device is a real cutey, its an all metal construction piston air pump presumably dating from the 50s. The brand is Hy Flo and they were made by Medcalf Bros in Hertfordshire. They were used for air supplies in aquariums and laboratories, size is 150mm x 110mm.
Medcalf Bros is long gone but there is a UK company that specialises in the Hy Flo pumps http://www.sonik-systems.com/pumps/, and there are even youtube videos on how to service them. You have to love the interweb.

Sort of,
Not all white chilled iron is low quality ,there's some intensive engineering and metallurgy that has gone into many areas of application where white iron is used.It can only be ground, not machined and not suitable for welding repair. Some Warman pump impellors and volute liners come to mind.
Chilled iron has controlled amounts of silicon and might have been considered low quality for other applications.

Evil bay win.
Managed to pick this up on eBay for the princely sum of $35.00 plus postage, it's 2 1/2" and brand new. Couldn't believe I was the only bidder
