What a great VTL! Congratulations! Once you have that going, you will use it much mor than you might think! It has capabilities that nearly no other machine has!
You would be able to make yourself some chuck jaws. I have made 4-Jaw chuck jaws in the past. And if I can, anyone can. I made them in pairs, starting with boring and threading a complete round hole, then cutting the blocks in half and milling the actual shape of the sliding parts after separating them. Milled the steps once they were otherwise completely finished by clamping them all togetether, Then turned a radius and grooves in the jaws fitted in the chuck itself.

    Thanks Joe.
Haven't had much shed time in the last few weeks and hoping to get some this weekend.
The new motor is sitting there patiently to be fitted so it shouldn't take much.
The jaws will be easy as the chuck has the sliding mechanisms fitted so I just need to make the stepped blocks that fit into them.
I'll be happy to practice on other peoples job though if anyone finds something big enough to make it a worthwhile task.
Too many jobs and not enough time at the moment though.
    Cheers
    Edwin

Picked up a Tesamaster 250-275mm for the princely sum of $45 including calibration . Cost me another $100 to get it here from the UK because Australia is apparently on a different planet to everyone else

Did it come with a calibrated length reference?
If not make a secondary length master before you drop it.
Get yourself a bit of tool steel close to max length and cut/polish and measure it and write it on the master and keep it safe.

Not bought, made. ER25 and ER11

Does mean I have all the collets for the CNC in one place now.
Australian hardwood with linseed oil finish. I wonder if the linseed oil will repel rust?
Perspex lid, but old perspex with the paper stuck on. Getting it off was not as easy as some claim. Does not matter.
It is normally stored under the machine but rotated left by 90 degrees. The lid flips up.

    Cheers

Put a block of camphor in with the collets, it'll help keep the rust at bay

Yeah camphor blocks, as the camphor slowly evaporates it leaves a thin rust resistant coating on the metal

I spend the past couple of weeks in my shed, fixing up the lathe. Earlier this year I bumped into a late 50's AI Hembrug DR1S. It needed a bit of work and only one speed of the 3-speed motor worked. Had the motor rehauled so thats as good as new now; Did some work on the rest of the lathe as well. I know, it's not about how the machine looks but about what you create with it, but I somehow felt I owed it to this beauty to make her shine again before putting her to work..Took me about a 150 hours work, kind of underestimated that.

    Thumbs up Scrapyard finds !

    Hi Guys,

I've been nosing around in my local scrapyard this morning and have picked up a couple of items...

    24-07-2018-012.JPG 24-07-2018-013.jpg 24-07-2018-014.jpg

This plastic bag was laying on top of an oil drum ! It contains seven taps, not in the most brilliant condition as you can see. They were covered in oil inside the bag, but the top of the drum had some oil on it. The taps, one of each are,
    3/8" X 20 BSW,
    1/2" X 12, 1/2" X 14, 1/2" X 16
    3/4" BSF
    7/8" NF
And the odd one out M10 X 1.5

I also spotted two slide boxes of carbide tool tips in the carbide scrap bin.

    25-07-2018-001.jpg 25-07-2018-002.jpg

The label on both slide boxes id the same.
    1204AFTN-05, PMK60, 10 Stueck.

I've no Idea what these are or if they are any good to me, but for a £1 a box and £3 for the taps, I don't feel robbed.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

That is a fancy square, I like the tamper proof fasteners. I imagine that would be handy running a Boring mill or anything with a big table.

This is not a ridiculous piece of equipment.
It is listed on the Starrett web site at $4,500. Look for yourself.

Oh I know how much they are new, that's part of the ridiculousness

There's also a handy slide-out tab at the end of the beam so it can support itself if you lay it flat
