Are you sure you have this right? If the saw traverses in one direction from end to end, then back in the other direction between the same end points, then surely the average speed is the same in the two directions (assuming constant crank speed).

It's the accelerations within the stroke that vary.

    Hi Graham,

An extreme massive looking crank wheel on the diagram but that shows the forward path and return path are not the same to travel from P1 to P2

OK, got it, thanks. The forward stroke uses less than half a crank rotation.

    Default Servian drill press

$10 old style Servian branded drill press from an auction last Sunday. I know this drill press was flooded in 2011 and 2013 but the spindle and quill are free, motor is RS of course. Interestingly the column is solid, none of this namby pamby tube nonsense.

The plan is to set it up with a permanent tapping head, but I'll need to install an intermediate pulley to get the speeds right down, has anyone done something similar?

Bottom photo is the sellers name plate, Martin Wilson is a name I haven't thought of for many years.

    Hi Bob,

Waldown use namby pamby tubes facilitating the dropping in of an eccentric mount for their intermediate pulley - //metalworkforums.com/f65/t1818...18#post1746218

F and R Tough like Servian used man-like solid bar necessitating a different method of mounting their pulley - //metalworkforums.com/attachmen...9&d=1503220046

Why is that Bob? If the motor was not running when flooded and it hasn't been under water for long it might be salvagable. (of course I dont know the circumstances here so I might be assuming a lot) I have a 2 HP motor that was given to me years ago that had been through a flood. It was nice and dry when I got it, new set of bearings and a new capacitor and 20 years later its still running well on a compressor.
    You might be lucky.

Got a couple of osborne roughing cutters on ebay new old stock - great tool - far better than normal cutters that I have.

They must be a right awkward thing to sharpen ? How is it done - google was unhelpful.

Do ya just find some more cheap ones on ebay ?

    Default Picture of roughing cutter

Roughing cutters look like this. see attached photo. I got a 18mm diameter and a 10 mm diameter.

C-tool on ebay was selling the osborne ones - they were covered in waxy plasticcy film when they arrived.

They munch through hot rolled steel quite easily, 5x14mm cut to make T-nuts from 25mm hot rolled steel bar easily done.

Default New to me Die Filer

    Just won on ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/vintage-...p2047675.l2557

I have been looking for a die filer for years and at the beginning of this week there were 3 of this exact model available. Two on ebay and one at Grays online. This looked the most original and complete to me.

Now all I need to do is bring it back home to Woodville SA where it was made. I would love to know where the Woodfast factory was in Woodville if anybody knows.

    Re - Die Filer
Good pickup, looks like it was listed in the filing cabinet category, so well spotted.
It looks like a great machine.

Thanks, I am very pleased about the price too the one at Grays online http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0008-...etting-machine
went for $409 plus 20% "buyers premium" and is only about 30km away from where this machine is located. However I still don't yet have a plan as to how to retrieve it and I am sure that is going to add substantially to the cost.

That is very similar to my Klass pedestal drill I bought around 1985. The only repairs I've done are to make an idler pulley spigot, a bush for same and replaced the angled bush for the arms. Dam good drill, won't be parting with mine any time soon.

Hi Eric, contact Graham or Steve at Woodworking Solutions Pty Ltd Address: 1174 Old Port Rd, Royal Park SA 5014 Phone: (08) 8241 2205,
They've been involved with Woodfast for quite a few years and they might possibly know.
They bought the Woodfast Australia business, traded for some time under that name and renamed it Woodworking Solutions. As people were buying Woodfast machines from Carbitec and others, when there was a problem, they were being expected to cover the warranty problems, when in fact it's Woodfast China's problems, as they're made there.

I rushed out at 7pm this arvo to have a look at a gumtree ad and for 180 bucks this is what came home with me (you should see the smile I'm wearing)

Height gauge attachment for vernier calipers (first time I've come across one)

I'll do a close up of the individual bits and pieces soon, some of their functions are unknown to me.
