D1-5 chucks
Anyone got any unwanted D1-5 chucks or backplates kicking around? If so (and it's not rooted) please drop me a line.
Bob Colles' thread got me searching for chuck options and D1-5 stuff seems pretty hard to find (why am I not surprised?). The SAG came with a 9" 3 jaw and a 12" 4 jaw. A smaller 4 jaw would be pretty handy - either 8 or 10". The only sources I can find so far are offshore. Just thought it might be worth putting a feeler out... Guess I should post in Marketplace huh?

Bryan,
While not the answer to your question, one idea I've had about the same sort of problem is buying a 100mm 4 jaw and mounting in the large 4 jaw. Maybe a short trem answer until you find the one you want?

Not really a new idea but a common fix to a common problem,if not a 4 in 4 a 3 in 4.

New to me. Mmm, clever and simple - my favourite!
Sterob thanks, I did find that site, but when I see no pricing I assume 'premium'. No harm in asking though.
My main worry about running the 12" for smaller work is the speed. Especially if I want to play with carbide, which I do. It's actually lighter than it looks. Kind of a beefy faceplate with jaws. I can lift it quite easily. But the thought of it spinning at 1500 rpm is still a bit frightening.

Pipeclay, I haven't found anything that says so, either on the chuck or in the manual. I will have another look. Even so, would you trust it? Looks a bit knocked around. Who knows how many times it's been dropped? Am I being silly?

I would be frightened too with a 12" Chuck Spinning at 1500 RPM. As Pipeclay has said does the Chuck have a Speed Rating?.

Does your manual state a Chuck size for that particular Lathe?
Is there a manufacturers mark on the chuck, you may be able to source some information that way.
I would be cleaning the Chuck as best I could looking for any cracks, pull the Jaws and do similar and also check the scrolls for breaks, suppose you could get it Sonic tested for flaws.
Dont you have another lathe you can use for the smaller jobs.

Seeing that they came with 12" chucks would indicate that they would be good for 1500rpm.
