    Default Painting a lathe - ?'s

I am about to paint my lathe, I have been recomended a product by a guy that runs a local paint shop.
    Its Valspar LIC40

LIC Polyurethane Enamel | Valspar Automotive Products - LIC Brand

Has anyone had any experience with this stuff ?

I only want to do this job once.

The paint shop guy raves about it, he has a couple of lengths of aluminium pipe which is coated with this stuff. You can belt them together, even dent the pipes and the paint is still good as new.

I don't have experience with that particular brand, but it is 2 pack which only has a pot life of 3 1/2 - 4 hours after mixing which means you have to get it out of your gun and what ever amount you mix will go off as well.
2 pack usually holds up better and is resistant to oil and fuel etc, but is also more expensive. You will have to buy the paint, hardener and if spraying the reducer.

Its funny that they don't let you view the MSDS for the activator for that paint. It may contain iso-cyanates which means you'll need some fancy breathing protection.

The product sounds great...but how will you do touch-ups? (It might be better at impact than abrasion resistance).

If neither of those points are issues I'd go for it.

Hi Dave, he quoted me $188 for 4 litres of the paint and a litre of activator. I will also need some compatible thinners for cleaning the gun afterwards.
I reckon I would paint the lathe and stand, and have a bit left over for another job.
He recomended one light coat , then 2 wet on wet coats . So I should have plenty of time to do the job and clean the gun in time.

Yeah I can see that one, but I can't see the one for LK40 which is the activator

    Hi Stuart,
LK40 is the activator, I don't see anything on it either. I would advise using a respirator with any 2 pack.

Not sure what size lathe but 4ltr's sprayed should paint 2-3 lathes and stands.

Thanks Greg, I read that you do need a fresh air supply ( for yourself to breathe ) if spraying.
It sounds like it has a few nasties that should not be inhaled, or absorbed through the skin.
With a quick google I cant find any negative stories about the product.
I am inclined to give it a go, just thought I would check if anyone had used it before.

Post up a few pictures when your done and let us know how it turns out.

When spray it try to do it on a warm day in the shade, or if spraying in doors in the cool, warm the casting up with a hot air gun before spraying if you can.
The local guy that recommended it would be painting it in a warm spray booth so wouldn't have problems with temperature.
2 pack does give a really nice finish strait off the gun, so best to have it warm to save runs. I am not sure how much painting you have done, but the top coat is only as good as the prep so take your time getting it ready before loading the gun.

My main paint is acrylic because I don't have a booth and it can be sprayed in the open air, but the rubbing and buffing is a killer.

Thanks Dave, I'm no expert with a spraygun, but I do a bit now and then, all my woodwork projects gets a NC lacquer or 2 pack polyurethane finish.

I think if I do go ahead with this stuff, I will set up outside the shed and hope I dont get insects all over it.

I haven't used this product, but I used automotive 2 pack PU on some MDF speakers and it's great stuff. Can you buy less than 4+1L? 5L is a hell of a lot of paint! 2 pack PU has a high solids content so it builds fast.

I didnt ask if it came in smaller tins, I wasnt too worried about having some left over, as I have some other things I would be able to use the leftovers on.

Not in any great detail, but he did say that he had the thinners I would need for cleanup.

I just called into the shop quickly while I was passing, I was in a bit of a hurry as I was doing a job.
I will probably go back and see him again next week, so I will ask him a bit more then.

    Stuart,
It said in the PDF thinners for gun wash.

    Ironwood,
Keep your eye out for one of those cheap shelter set ups with the fly screen around them that they sell for taking on picnics or setting up in the back yard for a BBQ. Sometimes you can get them for around $50 and would almost guarantee no insects, but let the air through to take away the fumes.
