Extra lathe change gears?
I have an opportunity to purchase some change gears for my lathe. He also has gears in the 105-110-115-120 tooth counts which do not appear in my (1965) manual.
(My machine when fully equipped will have all the gears in steps of five teeth from 20-100 & 127.)
I am trying to think of a reason to buy the 105-120 set...perhaps for an extended feed speed range?
Comments?

Ray that is the very reason my garage is filled to the rafters!

I just answered my own question. Do you ever have one of those moments when you discover a forgotten tool that you bought long ago because it was cheap and you'd need it one day?
I just unearthed my set of module 1.5 gear cutters. And what do you know? I also have a mill and a dividing head!

Greg,
Are you suggesting that buried under all that stuff, was a Deckel mill, abandoned some time ago when your friend wheeled in one Perrin Freres Milling Machine?
Talking about finding things, was looking for a book today and came across
FOUNDRY WORK for the amateur by B Terry Aspin. Next time I'm passing, I'll drop it off. If nothing else, there's a good recipe in there for date scones.
Now where's that bloody glass, I only put it down a second ago?

The Deckel does re-surface from time to time. In fact I am going down there right now to decapitate it. Recent reading, and the Perrin experience, points to the probability of grease being pumped into places it shouldn't. I want to ensure that all the oil passages are clear-I already found one that was plugged, hence major surgery.
In the past weeks I drained and inspected the gearbox and verified the geometrical accuracy of the Y axis, so some progress has been made.
I also ordered some machine lights and switchgear...Its getting to the point where I'm going to have to stop restoring it and actually run it.

Gregory,
What lights have you chosen? Waldmann, Jielde??
My Chinese Waldmann copy is a bit of a disappointment though it could be improved by the addition of a pair of handles to replace the nuts and bolts at the arm joints.
The grease as an oil substitute is commonplace. Bad enough on my simple little Hercus, a nightmare on complex machines. My Hercus had a sign on it's access door USE OIL ONLY. Every oilway was caulked with grease You read stories on PM about the hellish task it is to remove it from oilways on Bridgeports. I dare say the FP-1's purging will not be a simple task.

Bob, just on a whim I searched for Waldmann on US ebay. Up popped three new six-LED machines lights for $60 each b-i-n. This would qualify as major tool gloat if they were better known. One will be on the lathe, the other two are planned for the Deckel.
These are the heads only: I'll need to fabricate or cannibalise something else for mounting arms. These are 1800 lumen DC lights; the dark ages will be over when I fire two of those things up.
As far as the grease goes...I found an infection, so I am trying a hot wire up the passages to melt the old grease. That, and solvent, and air and invective.

FWIW Greg I found air pretty effective when "degreasing" my machines. Pop the fitting out, direct the nozzle in and wait for the inevitable snot rocket to shoot out the other end. Indeed I stripped my dividing head yesterday and gave it a good clean out. As it happened, as best I can tell, unlike the other machines it seems to have been spared the grease treatment, and instead got ... well pretty much nothing during its life! Anyway, all lubed up and ready to go, just amazing what a difference it makes.

I find invective a necessity when performing most tasks in and out of the shed. Oh you xxxx ! is a favourite when disaster or even a close call occurs or when presented with seemingly unresolvable problem. Somehow talking to an inanimate object works.
Pete, What dividing head do you have?

Umm, dunno ... the Hercus one???? Hang on Bob I'll race down and take a photo so I can demonstrate my newfound camera skills to you once again. I really hadn't done more than spin it a few times until yesterday but had a job I thought I'd use it for. As it turned out I couldn't ... headroom issues ... again But I looked at the centre that's in it and thought, "hold on, that should come out and I bet it's 3 MT, it would be real handy if it was". It did come out and it will be handy. Then I took another look at the fitting that was on it, it was partly painted over the spindle so not real obvious but I thought, "I bet that comes off too". It did, and wouldn't you know it's threaded the same as the lathe spindle so all my chucks just screw on. I was as happy as pig in mud I tell you!

Here's the dividing head Bob, did Hercus do a few versions of these?
I didn't worry about cleaning it up in any way, simply got it working smoothly by stripping it and relubing. All the bolts have gold paint on them (presumably to indicate they're for some form of adjustment) placed on them by the previous owner. I guess one day I'll get keen and clean it all up, but I doubt it's been used much, so other than cosmetics it's as if it's brand new!

They only made that one style Pete. You are lucky. Steve D sent me the main body casting in that box I was telling you about. I have had to make the rest of it, excluding the division plates, from scratch. When you have some leisure time, how about setting up an indicator and measuring the runout ( or lack of it ) inside the 3 Morse taper bore. This is Greg's thread. Should we start up a new one?

Sure, start a new thread Bob, you know how cranky that Greg gets
I should be able to measure that tonight or tomorrow for you if work doesn't call me. I would say the runout would be absolutely bugger-all though. It's a really nicely made unit, everything is very tight. As you know, sometimes we make our own luck. I saw this machine come up with all this gear and decided to buy it on that basis. I learnt my lesson from the lathe, the machine is the cheap part, it's all the tooling and accessories that really cost I figured the likelihood of me finding a dividing head like this at a reasonable price would be slim indeed. Sadly, as you know, I don't have the other plates for it. I don't have any particular attraction to Hercus, I think the quality is "ok" compared to some of the top units you, Greg, and others are running. But it sure is handy having many things interchangeable between machines and fixtures.

Bob (and anyone else who may be interested), I started a new thread in the Hercus section on the dividing head. Hopefully that's what you're after, let me know if not and I'll try to get anything else you need tomorrow. Pretty shagged tonight so I'll leave it there just in case.
