    Default Another oddball Stanley thread

I have acquired a Stanley No 242 Mitre box and one of the repairs that I need to make will require a rethread of an existing threaded hole.
Measuring the screw that came out of the hole, it seems to be 1/4" dia and be threaded 24 tpi. This does not conform to any standard that I know of, but Stanley often had weirdo threads (for a variety of reasons too assorted to bother with here).

Anyone have any idea where I could get a tap for this?
    Cheers

1/4" x 24 TPI was a thread used before WW2 .Not only Stanley but Harley Davison and other bike manf s used it.
    It available form the US.

If the thread is totally "tin fruited", I'd be going up to the next size, and tap to suit.

Need pics to really know what the problem is.

Jeremy, I have a 346 in the shed. Which part are you discussing?

Do I have to drag out the effing camera to prove it? I admit I have some stuff, maybe too much. I was a woodie and I have kept most of my woodie gear. Just so happens that I kept my superb 20's Sweetheart 346, hence the question I asked of Jeremy.

Sorry BT I didnt mean to imply that you didn't have one.
What I meant was, you seem to have a large supply of very nice tools, so its no surprise that you do have one.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I propose to repair the missing piece that you can see in the phots with either a weld or some JB Weld epoxy

I have put some pics below. I hope not to have to drill it out.

    Default Nothing's simple

The screws adjust the uprights and lock them in position. I imagine the JB Weld would probably pop apart when you tightened the screw. If you smack your saw into the uprights ( I've done it) the casting might further deteriorate. Maybe brazing is another alternative. Might make the redrilling and tapping somewhat easier.

There maybe another option. A while back, this seller had a bunch of Stanley mitre box parts up for auction on Ebay. The seller's name is Paula. Could be worth asking her if she might still have the part you are after.

    Good luck
