Without a picture of the spindle no one can tell you what it will be..
Could be R8 could be ISO30 or ISO40.

Here is a chart with measurements to find out what yours is.

If it's a ISO 30 it will have 2 drive blocks either side of the spindle taper hole, or if they are missing it will have 2 milled flats either side with M6 taped holes for them.

There is an outside chance it could be an ISO40..

The ISO 40 taper should be easy to pick up over the smaller tapers because it has a larger gauge line measurement of 1.750 inch or 44.45mm, where as the R8 and the ISO30 could be confused because they both look to have a gauge line measurement of 1.250 inch or 31.75mm.
If you measure the inside of the end of the spindle and then look up in there at the ground taper, the ISO 30 has a long taper compared to the short R8.
Either way there is plenty of tooling around for both, but you will find the R8 to be cheaper.

The drawbar thread would be a give away as well..
AFAIK R8 uses a 7/16 thread..
ISO30 uses 1/2W or 1/2 UNC or 12mm coarse or 12mm fine..

My Kondia FV1 is fitted with an NT/ISO 30 taper in the spindle.
The ER chucks are M12 drawbar, and I have some BEL DA 180 chucks with imperial drawbar, not sure if 1/2 in or 3/8 in.

thanks john. ill measure the arbor up tonight. i think thats the one in the machine im talking about. does this mean a r8 wont fit if it takes an iso30? its a machine at work. theres a about zero chance of them buying any tooling, i think they would prefer to get rid of the machine.

To save having to measure to much when you get to work stick your finger up the centre of the spindle, run it around the ID,if you feel a little lump it will be an R8,if theres no lump measure the ID of the opening at the bottom of the spindle,if its 1 1/4" its a 30,if its 1 3/4" its a 40.

With that being an R8 hopefully you will feel the lump inside the bore.
