New Jet Toys at school
Hi all,
Towards the end of last year the school came into moneys they had been long waiting for and as a result purchased 3 off Jet 360 x 1000 centre lathes and a miller among many other tools and machineryfor the ITD ,ie,Manual Arts section..
Given theres always some interest in the various brands and types of gear ,I thought I might take my trusty camera and take some digital pics of the machinery.
I had a quick lood at the lathes and basically they are made to the same pattern as as my 12 x 36 metalmaster with the addition of foot brakes, coolant pump and with drawable tray for swarf removal.
They seem a touch better than anything chinese I have seen to date and suspect they may well be Taiwanese.
If there is an interest please indicate and I'll take photos to order. With the jet mill I have not yet had a chance at a look at it.
cheers
Grahame

Yes we want pictures Graham....
Are these to replace the Hafco's or just supplement them?

Well neither really, the engineering shed is remote from the school manual arts buildings by a kilometre or so.The engineering shed is a dedicated building soley intended as a VET training center and is a completely separate entity from the school being run as part of a community project.
The community facilitated the buildings and grounds.
It was set up by my far sited now retired Hod around 5 years ago when the concept of engineering training facilities had barelly entered a pollies head. With all due respect to him ,he set the whole lot basically on his own with no assistance and worked from catalogues.
How ever, having learnt with the Hafco experience that cheaper is not always best ,this time around the man arts team did not rush into a machinery purchase. While obviously Jet machines are dearer that Hafcos, the school did get an excellent dea on them for the bulk purchase.including some big time support on delivery and help with set up from the Townsville based Jet dealer.
They were only going to get the one shot at it so it had to be a good un.

Wow
New Jet Toys at school
I gleefully open this up thinking I was going to see an array of pulse or ram jets at the local high school. Shucks

Talking of gleefully, theres a couple of them I have to put a rocket under, but thats as close as it gets.
Properly managed the kids should come to me fro Man Arts with a fair degree of skills gained on nice new accurate lathes and a miller.

swarf removal tray
Mines's a 3 dollar stainless steel baking tray from Good Sami's. Naively tried a plastic tray but the swarf melted into the surface.

As I have indicated before I have a disc brake to fit. While the lathe is apart I will fit a withdrawable swarf tray and sump coolant pump, hence my interest in the Jet lathes so equipped.

Hi GC,
Are you indicating that the Jet lathes look crappy?
Why weren't you involved in the buying process? I can't believe a school would not go "right down the burrow", before committing thousands of dollars on machinery.
mmmmmmmm

The purchasing proces for the jet lathes occurred before xmas when the departments we separate so I was not involved.
I suppose I have some pre conconceived notion that the Jet stuff should be a just a bit special and made by Jet.
I suspect that they are just rebadged. The ones we received never came through the dealer per se, just ordered through him and came directly from overseas.
I will do more investigation when I get over there next .I can only get over there once a week due to time considerations.

Those are not the lathes they advertise on their website
Jet Tools & Machinery Australia-Metalworking- Metal Lathes-GH-1440W-3
They look to be the same as this one, probably out of a different factory though..

You are right definately not Jet.
I was mislead.
The jet s would not have suited as the shop is only single phase while the Jet 1440 is 3Ph.
They guys did buy them through the Jet dealer in Townsville.
I did a google search on Jet and Global and in the abreviated paragraph sample thingy you get it mentioned Global making a 1440 for Jet.
When I click on that reference I can't find a bloody word about that-Grrrr.
Hopefully there is a parts back up cos with some of our cherubs they are going to need them.
