I gave up at this point
What do you reckon?
An out of the the box hasn't been adjusted machinists level for US$29 plus delivery
I gave up trying to get the mill level when it got to this...I reckon the cheap chinese level is faulty...what do you think?...

Eskimo,
Just make sure you don't drop it as it will drive you nuts getting it to read that good ever again.

I thought you bought one from CDCO and one from CTC, I haven't seen any $29 levels at either, are you going to let us in on the secret?
Dave
Edit
I haven't tried my CTC one yet, looks OK thoughLast edited by Dave J; 5th Jan 2011 at 09:01 PM. Reason: Edit

Looks pretty good to me .
If the level reads the same when you end for end it then you don't have a problem .
The graduations on the vial usually denote .002" per foot if it's an imperial level .

What did you use to Level the Mill prior to useing this,is the Mill bolted to the ground, what method of Jacking the Mill did you use and what Material did you use for Shimming?

I used a standard hardware store spirit level
x axis wasnt too bad but Y was way way out
No the mill is not bolted...
I have the mill sitting on 4mm steel milled plates
then had various sizes of .6 to 1.6 steel sheet shims to take up any remainder ...then finished off with steel shims if I had correct size, else used brass...
dont tell me I stuffed up ...yet again

It is surprising if you allready had the Mill that level with a standard type Spirit level.
I have leveled quite a few very large machines, but never to the accuracy that you have been able to achieve with the Standard type level, well done.
Would suggest to maintain the .0005"/1' that you have,to bolt it then Grout, would try for 1"/25mm of grout.

when my concrete layer did east to west leveling he hadnt been drinking...but i guess he'd had few when he did north to south
Pipeclay the level I used to get it to this was the machinist's level..not your standard type...that was what I used when I first put it in....
When I first put the machinists level on it wasnt that far out on X axis...was way out on the Y that I couldnt pick up on the standard type...
but I now have it level...well close enough...
It is amazing...
(I am on heavy black clay......the clay when it dries out shrinks...and for those dont dont know.....everything settles down...and the when it gets wet expands with forces you cant believe moves and can wreck a house.... if not kept at a stable moisture level
when I had the garage built I had a 6 inch slab poured on 6inch compacted rubble base....)
its now getting dry due to summer and although I have garden and keep it watered, you can see the bubble move if I take a step sideways to the mill......its only a small movement but you can see it move....wonder where it will be by the end of summer and then next winter?????
